urban75's albums of the year 2006

well kids, the votes are in, the tallies counted, and the numbers crunched. before i present to you the run down a few observations:

a much more divided vote than last time. more people voted than last year, with more albums nominated, and not such a clear winner. last year arcade fire's funeral walked the vote, with something like double the nominations of the nearest runner-up. this year is a lot closer. does that mean that there have been less great albums this year? well, it depends on who you ask. quite a few urbanites only nominated one album with comments along the lines of "this is the only decent album this year". however they invariably nominated different records. it seems that a lot of urbanites feel this has been a bad year for music. special mention goes to perplexis, who sent a desperate revision later on as he'd changed his mind as to what the best records actually were. cheers pal, that spannered the numbers! also, perhaps it's just me, but most of my favourites didn't make it onto the final top 30. what's wrong with you fuckers?

    Booka Shade - Movements

German electrohouse dudes tipped as the next Underworld, apparently.

    Ray Lamontagne - Trouble

Debut album from American singer-songwriter draws comparisons to Elliott Smith and Van Morrison. An impressive debut.

edited cos ianw knows how to spell better than me.

Ooh, the excitement. I love this run down...especially the dawning realisation that none of my top ten have made the list.

    Four Tet - Remixes

A remix album in the albums of the year chart? It must be good.... and it is. Check the Radiohead and Madvillain remixes especially.

I have to say, he was all over the telly a few weeks back and I just didn't get it. And I'm a big fan of Elliott Smith. So much of a fan that I know how to spell his name correctly...

    Clark - Body Riddle

Aphexy dark noise, confusing squeally stuff, and tight clickyness. That's my take on it anyway.

    Peeping Tom - Peeping Tom

Possibly Mike Patton's finest moment yet. A series of superbly put-together collaborations including contributions from Amon Tobin, Kool Keith, and Massive Attack.

    Let Bluestreak do his thing!
I'm sat here pressing F5 waiting for the next album, I don't want to see abortive attempts to post pictures of Hard-Fi albums

Tom Waits - Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers and Bastards

A Tom Waits career overview, a massive collection of songs that you may not have heard before, reworkings, rerecordings, out-takes and assortments. The man is a legend.

    The Roots - Game Theory

Personally I felt this was a little like The Roots-by-numbers but hey, you voted for it. Representing hiphop, funk, blues and perhaps even rock and disco, The Roots do their thing and they do it well.

    Damien Rice - 9

In which Damien Rice leaves behind the slicker songwriting of his debut for a more slapdash and endearing approach. Some Urbanites clearly like the results!

    Milanese - Extend

"Scrunching handfuls of jungle, grime, dancehall, electro and dubstep into the fizzing whole, 'Extend' is an album all about the friction caused when rough aural surfaces connect" - Boomkat says it better than I can.

    The Knife - Silent Shout

Electronica duo that crossed over this year from cult secret to coffee table favourite.

Excellent, at least one of my picks made it into the chart (Peeping Tom). Gutted I missed them live, same night as Nina Nastasia
