    Question Smithfield Market

Is it still going and trading from 04:00-10:00am Monday to Fridays?

Anybody ever been? Is it true that some of the pubs and cafes there keep market hours too?

Be an interesting early morning visit if it is still on...

We know someone who works there and he brings our stuff back with him, I think they still trade to the public but they start really early.

Yes some of the pubs keep market hours
So if you want a very early morning drink you can go there (it's alleged)

The sole purpose of any visit will be to appreciate the history, tradition and variety of said market in question.

Though a modest restorative ale or two may feature also.

There is a pub under the market that opens at 6am, used to go there after DTPM on a Monday morning. Good fun and they do a good fry up (or so I've been told, funnily enough I wasn't very hungry.

I believe it's called the cock, I have heard tell of another one in the vincinity as well.

AFAIK these still keep "market hours" (generally 06:00 start these days???)and serve fry-ups...

Fox and Anchor, 115 Charterhouse St

The New Market, 26 Smithfield Street

The Hope Tavern, 94 Cowcross Street

The Cock Tavern, East Poultry Avenue
(underneath the market itself - more like a greasy spoon than a pub)

there should still be, hopefully, an all night greasy caff, opposite the market, should you just wish to eat rather than drink.

Very intersting in the morning - especially as the Christmas trade kicks in with turkeys and hams stacked all over the place.Reccomended - interesting area all around.t

I used to work in the roofspace of Smithfield Market. Nothing quite like slipping on bits of offal on your way to work with a hangover then knocking yourself out on the sloping eaves to get to your shared communal workbench area with obligatory bowl of organic fruit.

Mind you, this was the heady days of 'new meedya darling' so I guess they thought locating above tonnes of dead animal was way cool and edgy in a mini scooter riding Nathan Barley kinda way *shudders at memories of people mountain biking down the middle of the office on their way to recontextualize the future*

No, I'm not exaggerating for effect

I used to drink in The Hope when I was a night worker - if the same guy still owns it, he's not too keen on the post-club crowd, content as he is with grumpy postmen and bloodstained market workers.

There's nothing like someone plonking a transparent bag of offal on the bar when you're nursing a 7am Guinness..

Didn't go to The Cock much (missus), but they're a bit more accomodating for all crowds.
