Supermarkets

I agree that frequenting supermarkets in your area will lead to corporate blandness seeping in as individual shopkeepers are squeezed out. You only need to look at what has happened elsewhere in London for that. I try and support my local veg shops on Rye Lane but the quality of veg is so bad it is hard to buy much other than the odd manioc. Most of the potatoes are well manky. The greens are untouchable! But this is Rye Lane!

But I never visit a supermarket unless I really get caught out and even then I can normally avoid them. Go to Peckham Farmer's Market on a Sunday morning! The meat is well cheap (they even give it to you sometimes ) and you can buy all your meat aand fresh produce from local farmers who can tell you how free range that chicken's life was... and once you have bought meat from there you will know that even "Taste the difference" tastes like shite! Peckham Farmer's Market is much cheaper than Borough Market, which I like but can not afford!

It's being converted into flats. There are/were a couple of planning notices attached to lampposts near it with the details. I'll have a look when I go out later on.

Alas no. I only went into it twice before it closed but it was a lovely pub. I can imagine it was really special in its heyday. Have you had some good nights there?

As well as the garage, there are three industrial units at the same address. There are no pending planning applications for those bits either (although a quick search on Google has found that Unit 3 is a 1,458 sq ft warehouse available to rent for a mere £15k p/a.........)

Actually no Didn't get on with it at all. Not sure why, but there was a bargirl there years ago who just didn't seem to like other women going in. I almost felt resented. She'd stand there eating her sausage roll rather than serve me It was a real lads pub then and hardly any women went in except at weekends when they were let out by their husbands - that's the impression I got

Just though maybe if it ever opened again, it would open with new staff

Anything from further up the Hill, ie. underneath Alexander Dumas House?

How about the car showroom corner of New Park Road?

The Lambeth planning database is on the web here - and is slow as fuck! You have to put the exact postcode or property number in... or you can scroll through all the properties (very time consuming). They do do a list of all new applications received that week, which is useful.

As for the King of Sardinia, yes there's a current application pending consideration to:
Quote:
Change of use from public house (Class A3) to five self-contained flats (Class C3) with first floor rear/side extension and second floor rear side extension and roof extension with dormer window and associated alterations.
The applicant is anonymous in this case. They have an agent acting on their behalf, which is Cyril Silver And Partners, 44A Tower Bridge Road, London, SE1 4TR. No decision has yet been made, despite the target date of Aug 2003, although we've missed the chance to send in objections now.

Gutted I never went in that pub. It's quite near where I've lived for the past two years (between Brixton Hill and Tulse Hill) but must have closed soon after I moved in. I remember cycling past it when I first moved in and thinking "that looks like an interesting boozer.." Oh well.....

The first time I went in there was some kind of Brazllian jazz band playing. Not many people in but it had a good vibe. Reminded me of the Landor in the early nineties - when you were likely to walk in to find a DJ in an orange dress spinning Puff The Magic Dragon. Second time it was a bit dead so we sat outside. Then it closed. That was roughly this time last year.

Sounds interesting

I'm talking between 5-10 years ago. Never went when it reopened because I didn't realised it had

Another update (I've been busy this weekend)

Apparently, eventually it will be a petrol station again (possibly within a year) with a mini Tescos attached.

I believe Tescos sell Rizla?

Lang Rabbie - do you know anything about this? If not, get up off your arse and find out pronto
My understanding of the SSCIL argument is that the garage site would be needed if a City Academy is built on Brixton Hill.

Edited to make sense.

Sorry - I've edited my last post so it makes sense and doesn't mislead.

SSCIL is the Secondary School Campaign in Lambeth. They are campaigning for a new school in Brixton and one of the sites they are championing is on Brixton Hill. This is all being discussed on another thread (http://www.urban75.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=74656).

I don't have any involvement in their campaign but part of their argument is that a portion of the Thames Water site should form part of a new City Academy. If it does go ahead access would be needed on Brixton Hill and the old garage site would appear to be a logical option.

Ah, the reason I wouldn't know about that is because I don't like children

FUCK those mini-Tesco shops. They're shit. They sell the most expensive brand items at higher prices than in their usual stores, don't sell the cheap stuff, and have a extremely restricted selection. People shop in there thinking it's cheap and convenient, whereas in fact your local corner shop is often better and cheaper (I did some research on this when one opened near me.) They corner the market and will put local shops and newsagents out of business. FUCK Tesco Express.
