They are called Dumbarton Court or Mansions or something. It's close to me. I am very intrigued by what they look like inside and the view if you lived in one facing back towards Brixton town centre.
They probably are one of the highest points in Brixton.

Probably depends which postcode the top falls into! My flat backs onto the park and I'm SW2.......but I guess the other side is SE24.....

I always think of it as Brixton's park! I LOVE it up there early morning, the view is brilliant!!

What's probably now a couple of penthouse flats in a block of "apartments" on New Park Road used to have spectacular uninterruped views from inside - back when the building was called Courtenay House and it was the canteen of Lambeth's Planning Department.

Dumbarton Court is on the west side of Brixton Hill next to the junction with New Park Road.

The block of flats at the south eastern corner of Brixton Hill by the South Circular (Christchurch Road) is Christchuch House. I think there are some great views from the upper floors (above the tramshed), but they are from bedrooms, kitchens & bathrooms, as the flats' main rooms face south and west. Christchurch House is in modern Brixton (as defined by ward boundaries), but everything east of Rush Common and south of Upper Tulse Hill was historically (up to 1965) in Streatham, as was everything south of Morrish Road. All points west of Lyham Road/New Park Road werre in Clapham.

The highest point at ground level is presumably near to the site of Brixge's Stane where the three parishes met - somewhere along Morrish Road.

The view from the louvres of the bell chamber of the campanile of Christ Church, Streatham Hill should be pretty good. Unfortunately I've only done the perilous ascent of the ladders on an overcast day [to have a look at the bell cast in memory of the victims of the Marchioness disaster].

I KNOW where Dumbarton is, it's road after Jebb Avenue if you're going up Hill. You need to check out Dumbarton Court.

I'm probably wrong anyway. I'm thinking of estate next to Renton Close or the estate after the one next to Renton Close :D

back to the issue at hand...:

i've been up top of some of the blocks behind the copshop - awesome view from the 10th floor - both ways - over brikky and out over babylon from the other side, taller than the rec i reckon..........

which is brixton's tallest tree?

lang rabbie
30-11-2004, 15:10
Brittany Point on the Ethelred estate is the highest residential block in Lambeth at 66 metres (215 ft)

Arden, Beckett and Pinter Houses (aka the Grantham Road Estate) in Stockwell are the three tallest blocks in SW9. Each tower is 22 storeys and 62metres (204ft) high.

Edrich House on Lansdowne Way (also in Stockwell) probably now equals them after some works to the roof.

Park View House and Herne Hill House (the Hurst Street Estate at Herne Hill overlooking Brockwell Park) are both 19 storeys and "only" 52 metres (172 ft high)

How high are those ones in Kennington (the one where one block (Kerrin Point) blew up due to gas explosion)?

Brittany Point is one of Kerrin Point's neighbours on the Ethelred. IIRC Kerrin was also 62 metres high. Think Brittany Point is "on stilts" with some communal facility (nursery???) underneath.

I had a little assistance - there used to be a website called skyscapers.com, that I occasionally consulted for planning news. Among its most geekish features was a database that tabulated the highest buildings in every Borough. (Ideal for pub quiz questions etc...)

Sadly, most of this information is now locked away on a paid for site, but I managed to retrieve the Lambeth page from my PC's cache.

Neighbours are Elkington & Ward points. They win points for being pretty much the most bleak concrete tower blocks in existence, though they are quite nice on the inside....

Incidentally my psychic powers were right - as I powered past Vauxhall this morning the bus station was still unfinished. Little bit of local knowledge for anyone else doing this - the new cycle lane south-north (past Fire and over pavements) is pretty fast, but in the opposite direction is slower than sticking to the road.
