Noticed today that the Electronics Enterprises shop on Brixton Hill is up for sale. Has the old guy finally decided to retire? Auction December 9. Wonder what we'll see.

there isn't a convenience store/off licence for at least 50 yards either side, that's my guess. my preference would be a bakery/sandwich bar

I think we could do with another nail bar / hairdressers.

Hardly a major loss considering how often the shop was closed :D

Brilliant, another convenience store no doubt

Internet cafe maybe?

Estate agents?

Kenfucky Chicken?

A second-hand shop would be nice, but unlikely. Or a camping shop - I'm still chafing over the one by Albert's Plaice going down : (

I miss the Tent and Tarpaulin Shop as well, but a second-hand shop is NOT needed. Streatham has enough of 'em :p :D

Ah, actually there are so many nail bars on Brixton Hill, you can't see them any more. Wood for the trees, and all that.

Even Albert, he of Albert's Plaice fame does a nice line in decallousing with his scaling knife.

I've heard it's a pretty bad fish and chip shop. I don't think I'd go there even if I WANTED hard-skin shavings in my batter.

I particularly like the "food warming" cabinet, which is "warmed" by a 60 watt bulb.

My friend Dave swears by the chicken wings. Mind you, he is a particularly sickly chap.

A decent grocers, that sold fresh (ie not minging/wilting) fruit & veg would be good. There's the Kwik-something place at the bottom, but that's about it.

Come to that, anywhere (apart from Tesco/Sainsbury) that sold decent fruit & veg in Brixton would be good - at the risk of a flaming, I think it's something Brixton Market is absolutely crap for, in terms of both choice & quality. But then maybe I'm picky...

what about the one on... oo lord, can't remember the name - new park road? you know, forks off the hill at the top there. a tiny veg shop that does some quality produce and has some good fresh herbs. i've got a client up that way and i always make sure i drop in to that grocers when i'm there. better quality than most of the market produce.

I have a friend who once had a dream in which she realised she was in heaven. She said it was very much like an airport departure lounge (I suspect she's seen A Matter of Life And Death or something) but she remembered vividly that heaven had a nail bar.

From Essex, of course...

You need Abel and Cole. It's an organic delivery firm based in Herne Hill and is really good. Mrs M uses it as well. (Seal of Urban approval or what?)

Has anyone noticed that the fruit and veg stalls on Pope's Rd have all but disappeared. The old couple on the corner were my favourites and they haven't been there for ages. A bit of a worrying development if you ask me.

Yeah, I don't buy all my fruit and veg from Abel & Cole by any means....I still use the Market a lot but I'm having to look harder for veg these days.....

A+J served their last fine cherries and eggs a couple of weekends back unfortunately, with a sign annoucing their retirement after many, many years. It's a sad loss - they had some of the market's freshest and tastiest fuit and veg. Equally sadly, the other old couple at the end of Popes Rd - the source of the best English potatoes and greens in the market- seem to have disappeared for the last month or so. Popes Road seems eerily deserted these days, with a sad smattering of general purpose stalls and too many sadly missed traders...

I often go there weekends, with the intention of trying to get into the butchers a couple of doors away. Never make it though as he shuts up around 2.30pm

I thought they'd probably retired. I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to say goodbye to them before they went because I always found them extremely friendly and nice. They'd always make an effort to stock English strawberries and asparagus, and they'd always let me taste their cherries. :(

I'd certainly pop round to yours a bit more if they also sold cheap second hand vinyl, dodgy dvds, king sized rizla and draught Guinness. ;)

Maybe we could start a u75 store in aid of the server fund...... it could sell mike's t-shirts, cds from PRoD, gentrification debates and cheap insults from ernesto  :D

Yep - what we need is a really nice ORGANIC grocers.

And I am totally agreed on the sentiments about Albert's Plaice - it's the pits! They usually only do warm-ups (ie. pre-cooked chips reheated rather than cooked from fresh potato) and the curry sauce is all lumpy!

Albert is nice though ;)

Actually you can already buy organic fruit & veg from the lovely Esme in the (Granville?) arcade bit nearest CHL/record shop/near Albert opp old Brixton cycles
and plans are afoot for another organic produce outlet to open in early 2005

but agree always sad to see small local retail outlets with character close down

I wonder whether the bus stop being taken away from outside the Electronics Shop had any impact on his trade?

Imagine a lot of the trade he got was from people who were bored and window shopping whilst waiting for a bus

Nah, the moving of the bus stop definitely killed off the old newsagent (now the pizza place), but the guy who runs Electronic Enterprises has been taking it progressively easier for a while now. I just think he's retiring.

yes, but the buthers is no good if you're working, and it shuts around 2.00-2.30pm on a Saturday and he's forever taking holidays (to Las Vegas - must be making a mint from never being open!).

There is a florist in New Park Road. Surprised your g/f hasn't pointed that out :p
