Can anyone recommend one -- APART FROM Pavilion Medical Centre in Brighton Terracce?

Since I joined it about 8 month ago I have endured a miserable litany of incompetence and bad practice.

I know someone who used to be a receptionist there who agreed that they are absolutely awful. Apparently they treat a lot of drug addicts but that is -- obviously -- no reason to treat their patients like dogshit.

Somebody tell me where the sense is in this: I have asthma and it has been pretty bad of late for several reasons which I have explained to the GP. Without treatment it is life threatening. I have been needing one inhaler per week. The doctor informs me this morning that I can only have one per month. So what am I supposed to do? Die?

They have also recently lost repeat prescription requests which I put into the receptionist's hand and failed to record my change of address details, which I wrote out for them, so that I missed an important referral. As well as being -- receptionists, nurses and doctors -- INCREDIBLY truculent.

I came out of there feeling like killing myself this morning. for all the NHS's problems there has got to be something better than this.

but there's the Brixton Hill Group Practice with something like 6/7 doctors but it's a very busy surgery.

IS, that's the surgery i go to and I think you must be living quite close to use their services. worth a try, i've had no problems with em at all.

also, there's another surgery by Brockwell Park (hobgoblin entrance)... don't know much about them tho.

good luck and hope you feel better! :)

I used to go to that one. Seems OK. There's about 4 doctors to choose from if you don't get on with one. :)

Brixton Hill Group Practice,
22 Raleigh Gardens,
Ironically, that one was recommended to me last year by a GP (drfranni). Unfortunately I wasn't in their catchment area at the time.

I have heard good things about the one on Water Lane but apparently their list is full.

Thanks very much all for your help. :) :)

The one opposite the Hob - Water Lane surgery - is alright. Been going there about 4 years & never had any cause for complaint. :)

The Pavilion Centre is where I'm at, and yeah, its not great. The woman GP is terrible, but the bloke is a bit better. Still not great though.

The Tate Library has a list of local doctor's (as do all libraries) - ask the receptionist in the upstairs bit.

I go to one in Loughborough Junction -- on Herne Hill Road. I rarely go to the doctors, but went for some jabs last week and they were great. The nurse was lovely, and we didn't have to wait at all. Got an appointment really quickly as well. The phone number is 020 7737 3928.

I used to go to the one by Brockwell Park and didn't rate it. Moved because my doctor did. There's also a Health Centre on Railton Rd -- they might have a Chest Clinic there I suppose.

I hate to say it IS, but maybe cutting down the fags a bit might help with the asthma? :)

Edited to say -- you probably know this already and I'm not helping. Sorry.

I've tried a few places over the years I've been in Brixton. For the last few years I've been with the Pavilion. Yeah, it's not fantastic and they do fuck up but then from my experience all the others do too. I've not heard good things about a female doc there, but she hasn't been with the practise too long. Don't think I've been there since she's started - and anyway I usually ask to see the older Dr P. The receptionists are a bit scatty, and imo fuck up a lot, but then maybe it's because there's too much going on all the time.

The office manager, yes there is one, was very helpful when I was given 4 identical items over 2 scripts rather than all in one which meant I paid twice the price. He made sure I got a refund. I feel they are doing the best they can given the pressure. The inhaler scenario is scandalous however and makes me wonder if the person who gave you that information knew what they were talking about. Try speaking to the office manager to clarify, otherwise best of luck with your search for a new practise..

Pavilion is the only practice I have been told I can go to for catchment area reasons - apparently they have 2 doctors and 8000 patients...

I think you just have to persevere with them... :(

i have to admit to lying about my address (only a little bit) to make myself back within the Brixton hill group practice catchment area (but i had valid reasons).

brixton seems to have a distinct lack of both doctors and dentists.

Mrs Llama has used three surgeries, one on Clapham High St, the Water Lane one, and finally settled on the Pavillion, judging it to be the best of a bad lot.

Problems with Pavillion have been that it takes a week to get an appointment, muddled receptionists, doctors palming you off without proper treatment, losing the entire waiting list for minor surgery, and just extraordinary arrogance of the doctors. Is this something they get taught at medical school?

For example, the doctor told me I needed two items which he would prescribe. He printed out the form and as I left I noticed there was only one item on it. When I queried it, he said "Trust me, I'm a doctor". Took it to the receptionist and she said "Oh yes, he's missed one of the items". That kind of destroys any faith you have in a doctor, when he assumes he's right despite a query from a patient, which would have taken him 2 seconds to check.

So, best of a pretty bad lot.

Some Brixtonites should be able to register with the Herne Hill Road Medical Practice, which I've found to be excellent. There are five doctors, two are female, three nurses, a chest physician, counsellor, drugs counsellor etc.

1-3 Herne Hill Road
Loughborough Junction
London SE24 0AU
