can anyone recommend a nice place for a relaxed sunday brunch? preferably not too expensive.

someone told me the bug bar used to do a brunch thingy for around a fiver. is this true? is it any good? someone else suggested the lounge, but with their 'refurb' it doesnt seem as 'comfy' looking to me anymore....

thanks in advance! :)

The Juice bar on Coldharbour lane does delicious grub, for about a fiver...and it's nice 'n' comfy...big sofas and squishy chairs :)
Not greasy spoon trad brekkie stuff, more like healthy soups/sarnies/ etc....
Oh, and there's also that veggie restaurant opposite it on Coldharbour lane, but I can't for the life of me remember what it's called..

I think the Bug Bar/Bug Restuarant just does the Sunday roast now, which although top quality, is £11-13 quid.

Has anyone tried the Ah Bar on Brixton Hill? I've been meaning to go there for ages but haven't got round to it...

Basement Jo's does a good Sunday lunch (and I'm a fussy eater!). I think it's probably nearer the £7 mark though

Yes I went there when it first opened and had a drink mmm chocolate martini mmm the menu looked good and reasonably priced.

Went back about 6 mths ago , the menu totally changed so everything was quite expensive £12-15 average. They said they were trying out new stuff so it could well have changed again

We didn't eat in the end but the food did look good quality

Sorry Rollem can't help I've never been able to make it out in Brixton around Sunday Brunch time, I'm usually getting home then:D

Cafe Prov in Herne Hill's pretty good for some nice hangover-healing ska with your brunch, although the quality of food's gone a little downhill of late.

I find Lounge does good nosh at a decent price. Anyone been in that tea shop that now occupies Lounge's old premises?

I have! I thought they were very sweet, but are just finding their feet. The breakfast was only £1.99 but of dubious quality, and the toast was very bizzare. It seemed to be a chunky bit of bread cut into fingers -- hard to eat with your beans and bacon!

I'll give it another try in a few weeks when they've had a chance to settle down.

It looks like that place on Atlantic Rd which was the subject of much debate a while ago is about to open.

Interesting - do they do a wide variety of teas?

*thinks* maybe I should just get down there myself ...

The Lounge, Atlantic Rd, Brixton (right next to the Dogstar) has long been my fave Sunday brunch location - sofas, papers, chilled out vibe and a big window to watch the world go by... I prefer the new location by miles....

www.brixtonlounge.com
(I'm doing their website!)

Otherwise SW9 (by M&Sparks) does a good breakfast (if variable in size). There's also a new café opened up where the old Lounge used to be, but I haven't checked it out yet (rumour is that it's v.cheap and basic)

The Commercial (pub opposite Herne Hill Rail Station) used to serve fantastic all-day (?) breakfasts. They came on wooden platters. Traditional full English. Mmmmm. Scrumptious. But now the platters are gone and the Heinz bottles replaced with nasty little sachets.:(

Still not a bad pub, especially if you've missed your train into town and fancy a crafty pint. And it's next door to the new trendy bar, Escape, if you want a dose of culture. Good art, sofas and live music but I doubt they do fry-ups!

There's a great place on Acre Lane (or the bit just beyond that isn't Acre Lane), on the right if you're coming from Brixton. Pooka checked it out for a posters partner who is a wheelchair user so that we could all have a nice Sunday brunch together. Great access, and great food. We loved it. Pooka will know what it's called.

Fantasia Cafe, Ascot Parade, Clapham Park Road. But doesn't open Sunday's (or didn't use to) - we went on Saturday Mrs M.,:)

Pullens by the station in Herne Hill does an all day breakfast thing for @ £5/6

ended up in the newly furbished lounge (due to my useless time keeping and the juice bar being full  )

still not sure about the "refit" but did have a lolvey juice and panini...though wasnt what you would call 'cheap'...

hatboy
27-10-2003, 10:46
Not a refit as such, a new location. :)

Where is the best and cheapest/best value fry-up?

Or the best and cheapest/best value healthy breakfast?

We had a lovely breakfast at The Phoenix on CHL the other day. And at 4 quid including a cup of tea, a right bargain. Filled me and Hendo up until teatime.

Breakfasts at SW9 are rubbish, and v. expensive.

Healthy breakfasts are for having at home. Ms T's home-made musli comes heartily recommended....;)

I went and checked out the newly placed :D "Lounge" on Sunday for a breakfast/brunch type thing and was pretty impressed. Good size breakfast, lovely latte, nice leather couches to slouch in and really good efficient service.

I'd also like to add I like the new location too, and will definitely be going back their.

The only thing that annoyed me was a group of "Tarquin and Camilla's" sitting on a table next to me talking about what parties they had been to and what car daddy had bought them. I wouldn't have been so bothered if they were quiet, but no....they had to shout out so the whole world could hear em

Went there on Sunday. Food is good but pricey (the American Bfast is nice but could be bigger for £7 or whatever it was while the similarly-priced sausage and mash was huge and very tasty and highly recommended).
It's slightly more expensive than Basement Jo but if I really have to eat on a Sunday afternoon on Brixton Hill I think it's better than Basement Jo's whose brunch is a joke...it's just a full English with chips, though the sunday roasts look fine.
The other thing about Basement Jo's on the Sunday is that the regular menu of good'n'cheap hot sandwiches is off and the choice is only between roast dinner or breakfast or the aforementioned "brunch". It's also slow whereas even when it's busy (as it tends to be on Sundays) the Ah Bar is pretty efficient.
The other option I suppose is sunday dinner at the Alchemist but I couldn't face him with a hangover though I suppose he;d have a hangover too so it wouldn;t be too bad.
Never tried the White Horse as I can't stand eating with dance beats going on in the background which I assume is the case there.

Pullen's in Herne Hill isn't bad, but does anyone know anywhere around STREATHAM HILL??? It's getting to be a problem finding food on a Sunday and I don't wanna have to cook.

St Reatham Hill?

Well if you're really desperate there's always the Crown and Sceptre.

Luckily I've never been that desperate:)

I've never been there because it looks expensive and wanky in a sort of male catalogue model with his jumper round his shoulders sort of way. Advertising agency types in espadrilles eating olives.

I'm fussy about my roast spuds me. I like them nice and fluffy and crumbly and crispy, not looking like battered old leather.;) :p

It was quite nice in the summer when you could eat outside. Am surprised Escape bar doesn't do Sunday brunch so the househunters could go and eat whilst poring over estate agent handouts. Now that place really is Herne Hillish and at night you need sunglasses to go in it's so bright.

You don't believe me, do you?? :D

Anyway, Minnie, when are you going to come to the Albert pub quiz then?

Minnie_the_Minx
11-11-2003, 17:31
Maybe they've improved in the last few years. I went once and that's what the spuds were like and I could barely chew the meat it had so much fat and crap on it!

Quiz? Nah I'm not clever enough for pub quizzes and you lot scare me anyway!:D :p

I like Pullens. Sorry, but I do. Cafe Prov in H. Hill is nice too. Also the Lounge's new location is great, and it's really nice in the evenings for a glass or two of red and some tapas type food. Really relaxed and friendly. Neon does really good pizzas and used to do a special lunchtime deal which was a bit of a bargain.

hatboy
12-11-2003, 17:34
Neon is so lacking in atmosphere I'd rather be out on the street any time (which is in fact a much more interesting place).

Blagsta
12-11-2003, 17:37
I went to Neon on my birthday. It was one of the worst meals I've ever been for. My friend's chicken was stone cold in the middle. They did replace it for free, but charged a service charge on its price. Cheeky cunts. My pasta was bland as fuck.

All style, no substance. Avoid.

I agree that Neon is not the best when it comes to ambience. But their pizzas really are good so I usually get them to take away. Haven't tried anything else.

Haven't posted on this site for some time. I used to own and manage Ah Bar on Brixton hill but after some difficulties with the other owner I left and haven't been back since. Would love to know how it is doing as I am still a major share holder. If anyone has been down there lately let me know what you think. Always miss the regulars as well and if anyone out there remembers me do drop me an email x

We go to Goya-I-mean-Tomlins for Sunday Brunch sometimes; great roasts and rather nice breakfast stacks, too. Not bad vfm, we didn't think.

Thought this thread had died.

Pullens: Is the food any good? Is it reasonably priced? Does it fit in with a walk across the park on a Sunday morning? Yes. Its just another place to go. And it's long established.

God. It never occurred to me to worry about whether it was 'too' Herne Hillish slash Clapham or something REALLY awful like that. What must people be thinking

C Ya ;)

Went to the White Horse a couple of Sunday's ago - food's taken a nose dive. Don't bother if it's eating you're interested in.

Glad you had a good meal Blags.

First time we ate there, we were surprised - thought it was really good. They took care not to stew the veggies and all that. Home made mint sauce. Little touches - nice. Last time we went there, food was mushy and mean proportioned. We had to ask for more roast spuds and there was a pervasive Oxo flavour to the gravy. Maybe it was the new chef settling in - however, fact remains it was nowhere near as good as remembered when we went before. Perhaps it was an unlucky Sunday.

Just a shame the actual pub itself and clientele has gone down itself compared to the great pub it once was before the new management took over and it was all spruced up :(
