Why do you need to justify it? I find myself liking much in the way of Mexican art, especially "El Día de los Muertos" type themed images. Some of it is very vibrant and colourful and just downright nice to look at.

ETA: are you having to write an entrance essay for a course or summat?

Because it tells stories about everyday life - it celebrates the mundane, not just the special occasions. And because it's cute

Possibly

You can get that with black velvet paintings, too.

Great exhibition in the British Museum about Mexican political posters at the moment.

Maybe to European eyes there's a playful and surreal aspect to Mexican folk art, which we might think is intended as such but might not be. There's also pleasure in seeing how familiar things like pictures from magazines are taken and reworked in original ways.

Did see a stall in Camden market last Saturday which had a lot of model set-ups with skeletons waiting at bus-stops and so on, and shrine-like tableaux, but many looked a little more camp and self-knowing than you might expect, perhaps they're made over here with an eye on fans of Yma Sumac.

Why do you need to justify it? And surely you're able to articulate some thoughts on what you enjoy/appreciate when you look at/whatever is you do with your Mexican folk art? "I just like the way it looks" would be good enough for me.

I mean... wtf?

I love The Day Of The Dead stuff mainly for its optimistic view of death and the idea of inviting your dead relatives back for a drink and a party once a year. Celebratory rather than maudlin. Seems more about life than death sometimes.

Just one reason for one small part of the genre I suppose but it's a decent enough place to start.

Like this? I googled "dia-de-los-muertos" (day of the dead apparently ).

Madusa- you'd definitely get an A* for that. And a big red tick. Possibly even a certificate Star Award in assembly, if they do them at madz's Uni.

I mean... wtf? She's doing a fine art degree. I'm guessing you can't just write "because I do" for every essay :hmm:

Plus... bit of thought and you must know, madz. :p

Yeah, so anyway, I'm doing a cost-benefit analysis of Allied Health Professional led NHS services in the Greater London area. Who wants to do it for me?

Madzone doesn't believe in thinking about art. It's all supposed to happen by magic.

And who are we to judge the Mexicans and their "magic"? Can we really believe that those who have sold our souls to capitalism can really be more enlightened than these noble savages?

Do you like the textiles of the Atacama desert too?

With regards to asking people to do work for me, I'm not. As for smartarse comments about not wanting to think about art - also bollocks. I have a book stuffed full of contextual references. I have about 60 artists in there. It's work that inspires me or that I like or even that I don't like and I've written in detail why that is. However, a couple of us can't explain why we like mexican folk art and so I thought I'd open up the discussion on here as I know there's a fwe people on urban who also like it.

The number of comments aong the lines of 'I just do' would indicate that I'm not alone in not knowing what draws people to it so much.

I've just googled that and can't come up with anything definitive. Got any examples? I like Mimbres pottery.
