View Full Version : Travel to Iraqi Kurdistan

Suppose, for the sake of argument, that I had to travel to Iraqi Kurdistan.
How would I go about it?
Would I have to go via Baghdad? If not, what other routes are there?
Are there any personal safety issues a traveller in that part of Iraq should be aware of?

You could go via Iran. I wouldn't recommend going via Turkey. I would love to go to Northern Iraq. It looks very beautiful and pretty safe.

from the city of Diyarbakir in Eastern Turkey you can take a cab/bus to Silopi on the border get a 10 day tourist visa and cross there.
It relatively safe to travel in Iraqi Kurdistan;to get to Eibil you need to take the road to Mosel but turn off abut 15k before you get to the city(a place you dont want to find your self in!)and never leave the Kurdish region.
Was going to make this a short side trip on my way from Istanbul to Iran by rail in the Autumn of 2007 but it really kicked off between the PKK and the Turkish army and i thought best not to...
Am gearing up to making this trip,by coming from Lebanon,Syria and then E.Turkey in the next few months.
As far as i know you wouldn't even be allowed on a plane to Baghdad without military/NGO/contractor credentials.
I saw something about someone opening up a tourist resort in Iraqi Kurdistan a whiel ago, apparently its very safe compared to the rest of Iraq.

Are you sure you can do this? I thought that border was closed.

Why not fly with Austrian Airlines via Vienna?
For the last few years they've flown direct from Vienna to Erbil 4 day s a week.
Piece of piss.

Why?
Its a relatively safe and easy procedure to enter from Turkey, entry via Iran on the other hand requires,a whole lot of messing about with visas.

You can, but it's with Iraqi Airways. Who'd want to fly with them when you go with Austrian????
