moved from Suburban at a good suggestion.

Hello you Metropolitan sophisticates.

Being a hick I'm scared of getting ripped off in that London.

Can anyone recommend a cheap place to crash for one night in Hackney or nearby, next week? Also, somewhere to get very drunk on good ale.

Ta.

A pub where the beer is good and I don't get attacked by anyone over 5 foot 6.

hmm that rules the Dolphin out on both counts. the London Fields pub opposite the city inn has alright beer, v much a locals place but not unfriendly. tht Prince George on parkholme road has good beer, but gets v packed with lots of 20/30something media types + failed actors and writers etc (i guess some of them might not be failed) on weekend evenings. most pubs on mare street are fairly basic nothing special.

Proper ale is served properly in the Penbury Tavern. Non smoking before well before the smoking ban. A little pretentious but excellent and well kept selection of beer to choose. Nice food as well.

As for hotels round here, god only knows!!

There's a hotel on Kingsland Road - the Rose Hotel - that's the only hotel I can ever recall seeing in Hackers.

God knows what it's like though...

I wouldn't go to mare st.

why not?

loads of good places to drink. Pembury Tavern is good, there's also a Young's pub on Lea bridge, next to Millfields Park (very nice). If you walk a little further up the river you'll get to the amazing anchor and hope - a fantastic little pub, very cosy with good ales.

nyargh, course it's on lower clapton road! silly me :D i get a bit confused, it's all the same road in my mind.

it may well be the cock. has free pool and sandwiches on the bar. that the one?

oh yeah and just to add support to those other's who've said it: the Dolphin's completely crap.

yeh i know the one, not totally sure it's called exactly that.

there's nothign exactly wrong with mare st but for some reason all the pubs on it are a bit grim, you can find much better if you go just a little bit off it (yeh the Pembury is good as mentioned.)

The Dove's ok for a Belgian beer or two, Cat and Mutton for trendies who like buying expensive drinks, the George on Wilton Way is OK, Pembury good as mentioned before, Pub on the Park ok but more of a summer pub, and of course the newly reopened Prince something or other on Forest Road needs further investigation.

Hotels: no idea!

The dolphin was fine as an after hours establishment, but after getting a mention in Hello mag by some Z listed celeb, its became 5 quid to get in on a Fri/Sat night. I told the bouncer that its a shit boozer and to charge for it is fucking nuts and have avoided it ever since. Went in last Friday night at 9 it was dead. HAH!

I went the other night and it was full of public school types with silly hair and very skinny jeans doing karaoke. We sat outside.

I don't see the appeal at all. When I went in there it just had the usual lagers on tap, wasn't cheap, and had a few shifty characters in an unotherwise dead pub. What's the point?
