It used to be 2 grand to get the working visa. Unsure if it's changed.

Can't quite remember but I think 2 grand sounds about right. If you're working out there (not sure how if you have any qualified skills) the best bet IMO is to find a temp job in a city somewhere, they always pay quite well.
You will inevitably find yourself spending money beyond your means, so I'd suggest a credit card with a nice fat limit as well, if you haven't got one already.
Whatever you do though, don't spend 3,500 dollars on an old 70s VW camper van just because you and your mates think it looks cool. The bastard things never go up hills!
Most of all have a great time though, it's a bit of a cliche with travelling, but it really is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and it changed my life quite considerbly.
Enjoy it!
Hire a Porsche Boxter for a day and do the Blue Mountains though, I done that last Friday :D
Yeah, i reckon its eith £2000 or £2500 in your account when you pass through customs with a Working Holiday Visa, which is probably the one you want if you fancy working while over there.
A lot of the time i reckon people just borrow the money from mum and dad for a few days and then once through customs wire it back across to them. I planned to do this, but the transfer didnt clear in time. Luckily the dozy customs guy didnt bother to check the funds were in my account and just put the visa in my passport and told me me to have a nice holiday. You'll have a pretty aweesome time out there mate. If you have a bit of dosh for adrenaline stuff it can boost the memories. That sort of stuff is cheap to do out there because all companies are competeing against esach other and it keeps the prices low.
Working in the cities is the way forward, the pay is alright i guess, but you can get a flat if around for 3 months, or stay in a backpackers, that can be a good lifestyle if you dont get alcohol poisening from all the nights out that are organised through them. I stayed at one in sydney for quite a while, about 6 weeks, and had a great laugh with other backpackers passing through, the staff were sound too. The Maze it was called. Yeah, so get the money together and have a wkd time. It will probably change you life!

I don't think anyone checked my bank details when I passed through immigration. They just printed out a visa and that was that.
Can't say any of it changed my life, it was disappointing compared to a similar trip to the US but there were some interesting places to see and things to do.
Try and visit Tasmania, very different from the mainland.

If you are planning on staying in Sydney for more than a month, I'd strongly recommend the Sydney Terraces (http://www.sydneyterraces.com/) in Newtown just outside the city. It's a group of houses each with 6 people in each one and perfect for the backpacker who doesn't quite fancy spending months in hostels (although this can be fun too!).
Interesting side-note: By staying at the Terraces I got introduced to Urban as I shared a room with an Urbanite. So if I'd never stayed there, then I probably wouldn't be posting this recommendation to stay there right now. Cosmic!

Go and stay and travel and work in far north queensland (cairns is the entry point). Magnificent part of the world, tropics, and a proper outdoor lifestyle. Best part of australia for me, although i've heard broome on the other side is good too.
At the least, consider something outside of sydney and melbourne. Probably make your money go further too.
