Or more to the point, can anyone recommend a joiner / carpenter who will buy it for me and then fit it? Sounds simple, but I've been struggling to find someone local since the summer.

The first quote was £3k plus  , the second slightly lower. My Gumtree enquiries are now just getting responses from geezers who buy it up front, no measurements, no debate about style and then expect payment.

Cheers

There is a front door shop in penge.Think they knock out solid wood doors supplied and fitted for £600 ish.

They have loads of styles and they are fitted by a carpenter (so the sign says)

£3k??

Ive just fitted a new wooden front door (from B&Q) for an estate agent and charged £340.00 (thats for painting it as well) Admittedly that was a bottom of the range door, but none the less 3k seems a ridiculous price.

You could try an architectural salvage place eg. lassco (http://www.lassco.co.uk/app/browse-products-list-view/category/22/category_uid/44/report/lassco_product_list_view/start/15/next/) although you'd have to be lucky to find one of the right size and also you'd still need someone to fit it.

I could get you a watertight door from a submarine fitted for less than that.

Wonderful - many thanks all for your help and suggestions. The £3k quote was actually £3,200 (plus VAT)  But I was assured it was the finest wood available. I felt sorry for the chap as he came all the way down to SW8 from Romford, just for the quote. But not £3,200 worth of sorriness.

Gonna go for a look around Penge on Saturday, plus possibly minas' man.

Many thanks again.

We've got a wooden door going spare, it's sitting in the back garden. It's 75.1 cm wide by 201 cm high. We're in Tottenham though, but you can have it if you want it. (we freecycled it but it's slightly too narrow for our wide council doorframe)

There used to be an excellent door reclamation place at the Larkhall Rise end of Edgeley Street, Clapham North, between the road and the railway... not sure if it's still there though, but internal stripped pine doors used to be around £40 - £50.
There is a good joinery company on the Summerstown Industrial Estate opposite the Dog Track in Wimbledon (sorry - don't know their name, but they do most things joinery-wise).

They dipped the doors though.

Dear god, stay away from the London Door Company ... obscene.

There's a nice little reclamation yard with loads of doors, in Battersea ... House Hospital. Much cheaper than Lassco. It's just in behind Battersea High Street, not far from the junction with Falcon Road. They're on the web if you want to Google them.

Forest Hill - behind ( under ) the BR station on Perry vale there is a front door seller / maker - they have a few of their front doors screwed to the wall outside - very odd - but you may be able to get one to fit rather thyan fudging one that isnt right

if you are looking for a new door, i would recommend F&E Joinery n Croxted Road in Herne Hill - very good service and nice guys. If you need a carpeneter, i can recommend a n excellent one based in Brixton who we have used for numerous bits and pieces (floors, cupboards, windows, warddrobes etc) . PM me for his number

I am very close to the sea, but there is a huge fork handles/four candles mega glory hole some 25 miles away from where I live. They sell anything from a pin to a propeller for a supertanker.
(They currently have a toilet for sale that will operate at a depth of 1000 feet under the sea. It used to be part of a the living quarters for saturation divers maintaining oil rigs and undersea pipe-lines.)
I am quite sure the buyer could find a water-tight door from a submarine second hand with no problems at all.

Many thanks for all the kind help in this thread - the deed is now done

I tried Croxted Road (got lost,) then Forest Hill (missed my turning,) ended up in Penge (but couldn't find the shop) and then somehow stumbled on Forest Hill where Dawes Doors (http://www.dawesfordoors.com/) were wonderful.

A new door by Christmas :D

Within my budget as well ;)

Cheers again, all.
