I'm thinking of booking a trip to Krakow as a birthday surprise for S (he'll be 40 - eek!). Can anyone recommend a reasonable hotel, or, even better, ann apartment or agency to use? We stayed in apartments in Prague and Budapest and they were amazing, but I also used an agency to get an apartment for a stay in Rome and they well and truly fucked up, so I always like to get a personal recommendation. TIA!

I have details of an apartment in Prague - in fact two. I stayed at them last year for my birthday, I think both apartments slept 6 people.
They we excellent, and just in a quiet locatrion off the main square.
Downside is, I'm in Bangkok just now and don't have access to my email that far back from here. I'm back on Sunday - I can send you the details then.

We stayed in the Hotel Wyspianski in Krakow.
It's just across the road that circles the old town, 5 minutes walk from the main square & unfortunately you have to walk past a very nice Vodka bar on the way :D
10 minutes from the bus/train station, & the local bus stop to the salt mines is just around the corner. ATM just outside the main entrance.
Basic rooms but warm & good continental buffet breakfast. Not the quaintest or most glamorous place, but certainly convenient. Can't remember the price but we got a good deal through hotelconnect.co.uk
Only thing to bear in mind is that it's on the stag market list. Our stay was fine during the week, but the weekend saw the arrival of some of our more shameful compatriots & it got a little noisier.

here are the two apartments we stayed in - really nice authentically Polish apartments accessed through a courtyard in a street just off the main square:

Photos from the trip are on my flickr page (http://www.flickr.com/photos/darrenjames/sets/72057594137505512/).
We paid 720euros for both places for 3 nights, not bad between 8 people.
