I haven't been to the Half Moon for a night out for years and had forgotten what a great pub/venue it is.

The function room at the back is a great size for seeing bands and the pub is resplendent in original Victorian features with a beautiful wooden interior, engraved mirrored walls, and an intimate snug bar.

Top boozer!

Is there still a boxing gym upstairs?

They used to have a great blues band there many many years ago

yes... but it used to be much better - before they got rid of the pool table, tried to stop showing football, put the beer up by 30p, and stated that they wanted to discourage their regular customers...

never been in there yet. should give it a go. don't have any doubts about it being a spacious place. it looks nice from the outside but also very sky sport television. which is not my cup of tea.

but on a similar note, the place next door to it, cafe provencale, is really sweet and cosy and delicious. lunch time club should meet there one day :)

thing is - it's now the only pub in the area that does sport on tv - and for a while even that looked doubtful. Don't get me wrong, I hate televised sport - but Herne Hill is spoiled for pubs and eateries, so it seems a shame if there are no old-fashioned boozers left.:(

This gives me the opportunity to mention that I'm playing there next Saturday in Eva Eden's band (lineup is harp, hurdy-gurdy/mandolin and harmonium www.myspace.com/evaeden ).

I like the Half Moon, it's a friendly pub. I've played there a couple of times and people always say hello to me there now.

It's not a bad place, though i must admit I only ever go there to watch the Irons on the telly.

There were two comedy clubs there in the early to mid 90's.

Was in there at about 8.30pm last night and there were only two people in there. The current landlord really is trying to run the place into the ground.

He even turned down a free offer to get the lighting fixed outside so it permanently looks closed at night.

Ah sweet, I'm glad they're running that again - I thought it had fallen into disuse.

Did you see Brendan Hoban there? He used to play with the rest of his band before they started doing Sunday lunchtimes at the George IV

Had you read my post above you would have known that there are still bands playing there :p If anything it's having a renaissance I think and there's been some good stuff on. They have an open mike night too, not sure when.

Yeah, I went to an E C night there. Was ace, including the very drunken heckling by the Flixation possie to the right of us. There was a very dire 'local singer song writer' who was murdering "psycho killer", which induced one of them to shout loudly 'get cancer' at him. Harsh.

I missed your post.
Glad to hear it - used to go there all the time when I was a teenager and then it all sort of stopped. Last band I saw there was the Grateful Dub (who don't even exist anymore).

I think it was busy largely because there was football on in there.

It's the main source of business for them now it's the only pub in the area that does it, and they wanted to get rid of it. They're still aiming at becoming a less popular version of all the other pubs as far as they can though.

I like the Moon but I'm not a fan of the owners at all. They do get credit for putting the back room to use though. THe old landlady never opened it.

It's not that overpriced is it? Not immensely cheap either, but mains are generally £7-10, with the most expensive steak option weighing in at £15. Wines are reasonable and prices don't strike me as that bad really. The local gastropubs often charge more for comparable dishes

Rarely get past the steak and bottle of wine option in there if I'm honest. It's a nice, unfussy place to relax and unwind in. Considering its location by the side of a fuck awful road junction, I can't help but feel that's an achievemnt in itself.

I agree. Back in the day, we used to go there a lot, but last time I went the food wasn't good at all. It's always been a friendly place though - they once burned a copy of a CD for hendo which he said he liked. :)
