Where's the best place to buy a xmas tree in central brixton (once they start selling them)? - I don't have a car so will need to drag it home... Thanks

The bit outside Brixton Village/Granville Arcade in Brixton Market usually sells some decent trees.

Mango Landing had some last year. Bit early innit?

I usually get Death Metal Magpie to lug one down from Acre Lane. I don't put it up till Christmas Eve.

There are some volunteers clearing a bit of the walled garden at the back of the Community greenhouses in Brockwell Park who are setting up some scheme at West Dulwich station - they were talking about selling eco-friendly trees this year as part of some social project involving young offenders etc. You might be able to get them to deliver a tree to the Community greenhouses for you. I'd ask up there - can't remember the guy's name but he's obviously well known there.

My gosh. Many of you have a different idea of where 'central Brixton' lies compared to me and (I suspect) the OP has.

Erm, there are some really good trees from Croxted Rd as well. If you've got a car a little trip out to Streatham Vale and Mitcham Junction will save you a good few punds and probably give you a wider choice too.

Lawrence (the grocer) on New Park Rd has em! (not yet, obviously)

Nice ones, in pots.

I nearly got one of those but thought I'd get the piss taken out of me. I had to paint my lounge a while ago and at our stupid house meeting my area manager was like "just don't paint it black HAAR HAAAR HAAR", stupid idiot . I wanted a white one but it couldn't find one I liked, I reckon if I got a white one and put really plain pink, purple and turquoise baubles on it it would look have looked wicked. Anyway, in the end I just got a normal plain artificial one and put glittery purple and gold decorations on it, I'll post photos soon!
By the way, the only place I've seen selling real ones is the greengrocers in Streatham.

That colour scheme would have worked much better on a black tree

There used to be a guy that sold them near The Telegraph but I don't know if he's there this year.

Probably nearer to Helix than Brixton itself

I'm looking forward to putting my pink glittery tinsel tree up next month. I got it a few years ago from Woolies and I love it. It's accessorised with pink lights and Paperchase mini mirror balls. Probably sounds hideous but it's GORGEOUS ;) . Will post pics when it's up.

That sounds like my kinda tree! I can't wait until I've got my very own place and can go crazy with the tastelessness. I'm going to get that spray on frost and do my windows too.

If you can't indulge in a bit of kitsch (sp?) at Christmas, when can you? :p

I saw some last year, so try Woolworths or WH Smiths or M&S as they're probably the only shops I go in.

Then again, could have been in House of Fraser

I hate to see all the dead trees after Christmas though, it's not very green is it?

Also, it makes me a bit sad :( I grew up with artificial and I don't think i'd want to kill a tree just to celebrate a (faux)religious ceremoney.

:) Hooray! I've already got a big mirror ball so I might get lots of little ones and keep them up all year. It's going to be like a disco in my bedroom! :) :)

I don't know about anyone else but the event that I and my family celebrate on 25 December is the winter equinox. The fact that the days start getting longer is one of the few things that keep me going at that time of year. A perfect excuse for drinking and eating too much - and giving each other presents.

We call it Christmas, like most people, but that does mean I have to be a Christian, any more than calling today Tuesday makes me a believer in Norse goddesses. And, in any event, the Christians pinched the event from earlier religions.

I also like decorating the inside of the house with green leaves and a tree. I just do not understand the argument that using a tree that is specially grown for the event is any worse than having a vase of flowers any other day of the year. It's a crop like anything else you buy at a florist or a greengrocer.

Get one in a pot and plant it... my last year's tree is now on the Windmill allotments.

I've now bought 18 mini mirror balls from Paperchase, all in traditional silver.

I'm going to make some sort ceiling-mounted mirrorball dangling device from wire coat hangers, possibly with flashing lights!

I'm excited about this :)

It's a deal!
I tried to simplify matters when I got home from the pub last night by sticking the mirror balls straight to the ceiling with blue tac, but it didn't work very well. They kept falling off and waking me up during the night.
I'll probably have an arts and crafts day this weekend instead :) :)

You know why? A guy at work explained to me that what probably happens is that they grow the trees, dig them up and then ram them into the pots, shearing off a lot of the roots and specifically the fine ones that absorb nutrients. I suspect the potted tree thing is a bit of a sham as far as keeping and growing them goes :(

Still - I have one from New Park Rd and he's very handsome :)

They sell the bases don't they?

I don't know, what's wrong with the youth of today; expecting trees to come ready potted and stuck into bases. I tells you, what's wrong with a bucket, a couple of bricks and a bit of crepe paper to wrap around like the good old days.

Don't know what happened to the Mango man actually - he was the good old guy who used to do the Hob for years
