The brilliant and long-running Brixton Comedy Club have had enough with the Hobgoblin/Hootananny and have decided to move to the Dogstar. They going to start again in the new year - still on Sundays - Jan 13th.

I think the Hootahob missed a trick there - the comedy was one of the most popular things going on at the old Hob. Still, the dogstar is as good a venue as any and they've got the mexican food there too (which also used to be at the hobgoblin.)

Good work, but there'll be queues round the corner there - the Hob used to have people outside from an hour before performance, waiting for the doors to open.

How they going to cope with that at the Dogstar I wonder - are they to close the whole pub or find a massive, undiscovered function room then?

That'll be a lot of airport-style 'patting down' for the burly security staff!

I imagine they'll put it on in the upstairs room. Probably with no beer on tap for extra $$$.

Sounds like the Hootahob missed a trick though - their big function room was well suited to getting a load of people regularly down and drinking heavily for a few hours of comedy. I can only guess they're reluctant to stop using it as the main bar for a night.

They seem to be bloody minded and cutting their own nose off to spite their face. On Friday they confined the Arsenal vs Utd game to the smaller bar, rammed to the rafters, whereas in the big barn a whole one person sat trying to watch the Celtic game, which they abandoned after cable sagas at half time, freeing up the main bar. Come the evening and after the fireworks and they achieved the rare spectacle of keeping 3/4 of the pub outside in the beer garden at 9pm on a November night, with a few hardy souls enduring the bagpipes inside. The smaller bar was slightly busier, with an 'open mic' night drawing what seemed like one act - two local characters doing a beatbox/rapping combo which proved both intentionally and unintentionally hilarious.

It's an uncomfortable mix to be sure...

We were in the smaller bar Friday night and quite enjoyed it - we had to take asylum from the big bar though. Didn't see the "open mic" thing which was panned to start at 10 but hadn't started by the time we left after 10... The smaller bar was nice though, in that they were playing good music (gorgol bordello), not too loudly and we were able to get seats (increased old fogeyism)...

Good news for the Dogstar but bad news for Hootagoblin and a bit annoying for me - I'd always had problems with the ventilation at the comedy club and was looking forward to going to the comedy club there after the smoking ban... :(

Actually you're right - all those people were outside at near 11pm!

The music's improved when they're not playing the Scottish stuff. Thankfully the Auto-repeat of Jamiroquai and Sheryl Crow's been replaced in the most part, including with Jah Cure, Chemical Brothers and Sanchez for that weird musical mixture. Real shame about the Comedy Club there though - it was a good match for both parties

I pass the pub often and regularly see people getting searched.

All late night bars such as Dogstar, White Horse etc should do it surely??

Judging by how many coke wraps are around and coke over the cistern you see anyway... ;)

What sort of comedy is it - do they have a website with weekly listings? Might check it out. Ta!
