They've closed down the Staff Club. Is nothing sacred? Not more luxury apartments surely? What a fecking nightmare. :(

Read the catastrophic news here (http://icwales.icnetwork.co.uk/news/cardiff-news/2007/10/24/mystery-of-club-s-sudden-closure-91466-20000413/)

That is a truly shit piece of news.

Any idea if they are just having a major refurb or is it curtains for the old place? Where will the anarchists hold their meetings from now on? Who is going to listen to Barry John's 1970s egg chasing anecdotes? Where else am I going to get a lovely pint of Brains for £1.85?

Use your anarchist tentacles Llantwit to find out some more info.

You what! Noooo!

Although tbh I've always been surprised a prime piece of real estate like that has managed to stay as it was for so long.

Sad sad day though. So many fond memories of high jinx and rugby internationals.

Fuck that, I'll use my membership card - e-mail sent to the council, but don't expect a reply any time soon.

yay!

but isn't that what the councils are kinda claiming here?
Inquiries were directed to Rhondda Cynon Taf council, but the authority today refused to comment claiming “commercial sensitivity”.

The notice reads: “Take notice that we, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Bridgend, Caerphilly and Merthyr Tydfil (county borough councils), owners and persons entitled to possession of these premises, have today re-entered thereon in accordance with our power to do so and as a consequence of such re-entry, the premises have been secured.

“And further take notice that no persons may lawfully enter onto these premises unless they have been authorised by us to do so.”

The notice, posted on Monday, also threatens with prosecution anyone who tries to get into the club and directs queries “concerning this property and removal of the goods” to an officer in RCT council corporate estates department.

The word on the street is that the Staff Club's fate will be decided by next Monday. Can't give the exact reason it closed (as told to me anyway) as it might be deemed sensitive information at this stage. Not that it's anything particularly exciting. Temporary HQ now seems to be Kiwis. ;)

why is this deemed bad news? the place is an absolute shite hole that was essentially a private drinking hole for alcholics! i am confused that anyone would think that this place would be something that welsh people would wish to showcase as a city centre destination.

I don't wish to showcase as a city centre destination. I want to be able to go to my private drinking hole with my fellow alcholics.

I saw your name on the post and I just knew you'd say something like that WW.
Speaking for myself, I like it because it's unpretentious, lets political groups have their meetings in the upstairs rooms for free, serves excellent cheap (CAMRA reccommended) real ale, and it's very friendly. WTF should it have to showcase anything? There's enough bars 'showcasing' lflashy mediocrity in the city centre already.
I took a bunch of mates in town for the All Blacks game there recently to watch the England-Australia game. They wanted to go to Walkabout, but couldn't get in because it was full, so I thought I'd show them one of my favourite Cardiff watering holes. They loved the place too. Really good crowd of typical staff club old men, and plenty of visitors from the UK, NZ, even a few Aussies. The banter was spot on, and the atmosphere was everything I like about watching rugby in Wales - welcoming, friendly, witty, antagonistic without being threatening, and good fun.
There are hardly any places that typify this particular (maybe dying) brand of South Wales community life left in the centre of Cardiff any more, and that's a shame, I think. To see the staff club become yet another soul-destroying slice of yuppie bar mediocrity or yet another block of expensive 'executive flats' would be a real shame.

There was a rumour doing the rounds last Friday that it would be re-opening today. However when I had a gander lunchtime it was still closed. :(

WW - you want shooting.

Oh, and while I'm on the subject of hostelries - dunno if this is old news on here or not - but The Vulcan has been given a 2 year reprieve. Was in there last Friday - there was a man at the bar picking his teeth with a knife. Very Tom Waits.

Glamorgan Club set to be auctioned off

Nov 20 2007 by Ben Glaze, South Wales Echo

A CITY centre watering hole will be auctioned to the highest bidder.

The Glamorgan Club in Westgate Street, Cardiff, closed its doors for the final time last month when it was repossessed by the four South Wales councils which owned it.

Today, a sign hangs over the club saying it will be sold.

Colliers CRE Auctioneer Graham Johnson said bidders at an auction on December 3 would be told the property was on the market, but it would go under the hammer on February 18 at an auction in London.

It is possible the successful bidders could apply to Cardiff council to vary the use of the premises and turn it into trendy apartments.

Selling the club to the highest bidder is likely to generate much-needed revenue for the cash-strapped Rhondda Cynon Taf, Bridgend, Caerphilly and Merthyr Tydfil councils.

The once-popular venue, which has been a members’ bar in later years, is in a prime city centre spot on the corner of Westgate Street and Womanby Street.

It is the Campaign for Real Ale’s Cardiff branch’s current club of the year. The premises were previously owned by Mid Glamorgan County Council but the responsibility split in four in 1996 with local government reorganisation.

Thats it then :( No more staff club. Trendy pub or appartments winging their way. Appartments probably seeing as Yates is empty most nights.

in the echo today they are reporting that the bloke who ran/runs the Toucan has submitted a planning/licensing application to turn it into a 400 capacity permanent home for the 'Toucan'
Simon Kingman says "I would like to call on all musicians and music lovers who want to support my application to write in to the council and hopefully i'll be able to put my plan into action to creat a unique space in the city with a relaxed cafe-bar environment where people can meet, collaborate, practise together, share skills and perform as well as socialise and see some fantastic new music being played"

interesting?

I used to do the open mic night sometimes at the Gate, it was a bit odd. Some of the musicians were good, but crap audience. You would hear people who had come from their office for a drink in the Gate rather than for the music, and would talk louder to drown out the musicians.
