:D
I've very excited about this - I hope I've picked a nice area to live.

Any reccomendations on boozers? I spotted one called "The Famous Three Kings"? Looked pretty decent.

Also noticed a market down the road towards West Brompton.

Does anyone live around there? Any really nice places to eat/cafes/etc that I should know about?

Cheers

Pub is quite well known for watching sports. (Used to be very famous for music at one time). It's a large place with lots of TVs...

Depends on your taste in pubs as to whether it will be quite your scene but there are various other ones in the area if not.

The market on N End Rd will indeed be useful. There are various places to eat towards Brook Green and Hammersmith.

I used to live on the Olympia end of North End Road.

I can't think of anything to say about it. S'boring.

Nah it aint posh its pretty ghetto, when I got there I was like what the fuck - right next to a megahuge council estate with one massive high rise and about 5 smaller buildings and a bunch of normal houses - but if you walk a couple of minutes in any direction it gets ok.
Another advantage of living in a bit of a dodgy area is the nice selection of dodgy kebab shops instead of McDonalds/KFC.
Plus I'm right next to the tube so it'll be pretty easy to get anywhere.

20 mins on tube to The City.
Walk a few mins down the road to west brompton and can get to overland to Balham.
25mins on the bus to Camden Town.
Fulham Broadway/Kensington High St aint far either.

You really are new to London, aren't you?

Well yes, but I understand that in the grand scheme of London it aint that bad but I've never really lived within 2 or 3 miles of council housing before so its a bit different for me!!

1st lesson:

Council housing does not equal ghetto.

There is nowhere in London that isn't within half a mile of council housing I'd say :D

wow, where are you from then?

Orignally Leicester, spent some time in Crowthorne, Berkshire and of course Uni halls in Birmingham (that was probably less than 2/3 miles from council housing actually but it felt like it was in its own world anyway)

Just wondering - what area is actually "ghetto"?

Ooh it'd take a braver man than me to answer that! :D

What you do need to remember is each London borough has around the same population as Leicester, give or take, so to say borough x is bad or borough y is good is generalising in the extreme. For instance (as you are finding out) not all of Kensington is posh. But that doesn't make the areas that aren't 'ghettos'

Used to work round there.

3 Kings is pretty shit tbh. Used to have about the worst service I've ever known in a pub, has improved a bit but still wouldn't bother. Useful if there's an obscure match on you can't see anywhere else though.

Best thing in that area IMO is the Best Mangal kebab shop/Turkish restaurant IMO. Just over the dual carriageway from the 3 Kings. Looks like your standard dodgy kebab place but miles better than that inside.:)

'Fraid I have to join in with people laughing at you for thinking it's 'ghetto' though.:p It's hardly a rough area by a long shot.

Monkeygrinder's Organ,

Thanks for the heads up on the Turkish resturant, I know an Iraqi place just like that on Edgeware Road which looks like standard dodgy kebab place outside but is amazing inside with those alcove type steating areas oh and all the extra naan breads you like for free. Check it if you're ever hungry around that way. Its got a red sign and is next to a cheap fried chicken place.

I lived on NE Road in West Ken for a couple of years - loved it. Shops are very handy. Close to Earls Court, some good places to eat and drink there.

There are actually two of those - the other is a few yards along North End Road walking southwards.

I'm sorry to say that I lived around there for 6 months or so, and I thought it wasn't that good.

North end road market is ok. There is a theatre pub between west kensington and barons court which is ok. There are some good turkish barbers near Lillie road, and there is a very good barber in Fulham Broadway.

but there are many many other places in London that are better.

There's a really cute tiny, tiny pub if you walked west from Northend Rd towards Barons Court. It's next to the Queen's Tennis Club. It has like 2 tables in it but is dead cozy.

A few of my mates have been mugged on the stretch of Northend Rd between the A4 and Lilly Road. But elsewhere seems really nice. You be stuck for nightlife though unless you want to head to Fulham B'way (10m walk).

I used to live in Earl's Court just over the railway tracks and it was dead boring (although the architecture was amazing).

I was thinking the 24 hour bus N27/28 to Camden Town would be pretty handy for nightlife.

Although your mates getting mugged (a few times...) -- on the exact bit of North End Road I'll be living -- is a bit scary! I'm just hoping your mates looked like pussies or something.

.
It will also take you to notting hill, and places like the notting hill arts club (death disco is quite good and free before 8pm)

if you walk down to fulham broadway then you can catch the 11 or n11 to shoreditch/st pauls, handy for the 333, fabric, turnmills, etc

there is an underground club near lily road, which I found out about by seeing a bloke knock on a door next door to a shop, I knocked on the door, and a very fierce transvestite opened the door and looked me up and down and said 'you're not coming in'

The 28 doesn't go all the way to Camden during the day so that's a pain, but the N28 is aces. I used to work in The Electric Ballroom when I lived in W14 - the only sober person reading a book at the bus stop home :D

Heh, I know. It's proper gash isn't it.

It's just full of rubbish highstreet bars full of people that think that they don't go to rubbish highstreet bars.

I used to be a student at Imperial College and lived in Fulham. I was forced to go to the Prospect/Belushi's every bloody Thursday for the cheap £1/pint thing and died a little inside each time.

Did I learn not to go the following week? Did I bollocks.

I cant really think of anywhere to properly go out in West London really

Sorry, didn't mean to scare you! This can happen anywhere though. One of the students at my old uni got shot in the face over in Parson's Green in a really posh bit.

It's just what you're used to I guess. When I lived in Earl's Court it was all massive houses and toffs so walking through the W Kensington estates was a bit scary. But now I don't give a shit walking through Brixton at night.

What is the proper name for that bread that your kebab comes in? On the board it says "donner kebab in naan"?
