Other than the tube station the Shopping Centre and The Den (Ok, not quite Surrey Quays) I don't really have much experience of it.

Anyone know what its like to live in? Any pubs and places to eat that I should visit?

It's good round there:cool:
I live near the Den and I'm always round Surrey Quays walking my dog, there's a nice big woodland area at the back of the shopping centre, and in the other direction is the Wibbly Wobbly (http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/54/5470/Wibbly_Wobbly/Surrey_Quays) pub.

I love it. My favourite pubs are the ship and whale (yummy piri piri chicken, decent steaks and reasonable ale), and the blacksmith arms (stunning thai food). The moby dick does a big breakfast for a fiver. The Aardvark is full of gorgeous south african girls - fun&friendly there. The mayflower has won awards for their food, but I haven't eaten there. There's a cheap sam smiths pub somewhere towards rotherhithe, but I can't remember what it's called - something Angel?

The odeon nearby is massive. Walking around russia dock woodlands is a great way to spend a few hours. If you get bored of the area, you're really close to london bridge. And if you hop on the ferry at greenland pier, you can get to canary wharf in a few minutes. Round there, you can go to gaucho for some of the best steaks in london, or the gun (nice food, and a good view).

There's a wetherspoons next to surrey quays station if that's your thing.

As for living there, I found it really peaceful. We did occasionally get dodgy-looking kids smoking weed on our doorstep, but they never caused trouble.

The main thing that I got pissed off with was the number of dog owners that refused to pick up their dog's poo. I always had to be really on my guard not to step in it.

Hope you weren't one of those people mr baddog *shakes fist* :p

Also, if can eat lots of food, go to spice island for a sunday roast. For something like 7 or 8 quid, you get a roast dinner, with as many trimmings as you can fit on the plate.

I mostly know the area north of greenland dock, around salter road, and rotherhithe. Lived there for about 10 months.

But there are some godawful estates around there too...Quite an area of contrast. Folks I know who own houses there insist that they live in Rotherhithe...

Miles and miles of virtually identical middle class "homes", everybodys fucking white, unless they work in the kitchens of course - see why its popular with the Jaarpie crew. Whooly free of all imaginantion, colour and contrast it is a lasting monument to the greed and utter lack or scuple of the LDDC and the spec builders who flung those vast estates up.
As for Canary Wharf, above ground, constant blustering wind, below a truly termite land of tunnels, swarming bodiess and endless fucking chain stores

The entire area was designed with the flair normally reserved for caravan parks in Southend

Utterly shite and loathesome

I used to regularly visit the UCI cinema there during the late 1990s with a girlfriend I was seeing at the time.

That's "jaapie", but what would a rooinekker know. :)

There are lots of non-white people jammed into obscene council high-rises away from the old docks area.

I cant spell, but the place still stinks

And yes, it still has true Abandonned Underclass Estates hidden from sensitive white collar workers eyes. North of the river the change from Canary Waharf to the other side of the DLR tracks at Poplar........

It was fairly multicultural where I lived. But I guess you've already made up your mind about the place.

When were you last there?:D
It was pretty soulless years ago, but it has improved a lot since then imo, it's very scenic in places - a nice place to go and just chill out and look at boats and that. Some of the housing got bought by housing associations a while ago, so there's more of a mix of people there now, not just rich folk...

I liked Surry Quays when I lived there as a student about 5 years ago. Nice pubs around the water, nice bike rides along the Thames. Close to Deptford, Greenwich and good transport links into town.

Also, the 24 hour Tesco's was very easy to pich from. I was very poor.

jaapie=slang for South African, more specifically Afrikaaners. As in "those fucking jaapies" as my Dad used to say. Then my sister married one. And I'm about too as well :)

Watch out for the ELL closing in December as its about to be switched into the new Dalston - Crystal Palace / West Croydon overground extension. Buses for about 2 years i think.

Best check on the TfL website ..............

I'm dreading that, not cos the tube will be closing but because they are building the track right over the field that is next to my estate:eek: ,the field is the best thing about living on this estate, and it provides a handy shortcut to walk to Surrey Quays, we've been told it's all going to closed off to us soon -s' going to be terrible.

Yeah it's shit how they're filling in areas all over the place. There was that lovely brownfield site near the incinerator that would have made an awesome park but is now some crappy thing called the Gemini estate.

Is there any truth to the rumour that London Transport renamed the old Surrey Docks Station and, therefore, also the subsequent development in memory of the near homophonous mistress of the unpopular Tory transport minister, Cecil Parkinson.

I'm guessing it was more because there was less sense calling it ' - Docks' once they'd all been filled in, and perhaps because they wanted to rebrand it if the docks were associated with a dead industry and dereliction.

Now this does my nut. Why is this a problem, unless everyone stsrts hanging out the st George's Cross and being hostile to others?

I'm a bit fucking sick of this being used as a slur.
