Yesterday evening whilst out in the West End I received a text message from my wife enquiring as to whether I would be home for dinner. My phone is not on bluetooth and my mates would not wind me up in this manner.

Two minutes later I received a phone call (number withheld) from a total stranger stating that my wife had been kidnapped and was being raped (complete with realistic sounds in background.)

After about two minues of me shouting 'Who the fucking hell are you?' down the phone, the caller said not to worry 'You've been phonejacked.'

It would seem some people think it is funny to intercept an SMS message and use it's contents to scare the living shit out of a stranger. Be warned.

That sounds terrible. I trust you contacted the police and your phone company? They will have logs on who called.

You can't intercept SMS messages. You can forge who they're from, but that's it. Maybe someone did that, or maybe they used her phone.

You can't intercept SMS messages. You can forge who they're from, but that's it. Maybe someone did that, or maybe they used her phone. Sounds like your common or garden malicous call combined with a coincidence ( receiving the SMS from his missus)

Perhaps they read about virtual kidnappings (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/from_our_own_correspondent/6961741.stm) in south america on the Beeb and wanted to get in on the act ??

I'd agree, if it really bothers the OP then they should get in touch with the cops and their phone company and get them to pull the call logs. If the guy doing it has any sense though, they'll be using a throwaway anonymous PAYG mobile. However their complaint might lead to a proper investigation if its happened to others too.

Nasty.:(

When you say the phone "is not on Bluetooth", what do you mean. Although you may never have used Bluetooth, are you sure the phone doesn't have Bluetooth capacity and it hasn't inadvertently been left with a setting that is still transmitting a Blueetooth signal?
