Im in Kent at the mo and have my 7 year old with me. Seeing as the weather is shite Im looking for somewhere interesting to take her and Dickens Worlds in Chatham has been suggested.

Is it worth it? Or is it the pile of pony I suspect it is? Any other suggestions for a wet thursday in August?

The wisdom and experience of south east urbanites much appreciated.

Someone should set up an Irvine Welsh world, now that would be somewhere to take the kids!

No. I went to Dicken's House in Rochester but that was tiny. Where have built that - on the Strand? (my nan was from Chatham - spent a lot of my childhood there)

Not been to Dickens World, but I can tell you that Chatham Royal Dockyard is cool. Me and dad went there when we were bored a few years back and it's very interesting and fun. Particularly good if you have a kid who loves boats and big vehicles. It's a massive site, so you can probably only get round bits of it in a day, but it is a great example of a good historical experience for kids (and adults).

Like the vast majority, indeed all, of the posters on this thread I have never been to 'Dickens World',

But as a child I liked the Tank museum at Bovington.

Dickens world may be a bit boring for a 7 year old, why not take her to the haunted tunnels of Fort Amhurst, or Rochester castle/cathedral or Upnor castle?? or the Dockyard?? or the Royal Engineers museum (lots of buttons to push)
or the Strand at gillingham, even in the rain

*gets homesick* :(

my mum might be working there soon.

but not if she has to dress up as a victorian.

I'll get her to tell me what it's like.

Really?! Why was it crap?

I kinda like the sound of it - just cos a Dickens-themed thempark seems so ....WEIRD. And fun.

But yes, it could be potentially really dire.

Why go for all this Disneyfied crap, go for the real Dickens experience. Send your child out pickpocketing and beat it with a poker if it doesn't bring back anything of value.
