Traders have accused managers of bullying as one of London's most famous markets closes for redevelopment.

I have very found memories of Camden. Kinda glad I'm not over there to see it all destroyed. :( A real shame.

that's a right bummer. the camden lock bits of the market are shite, full of alternative-by-numbers tat and stalls selling hash pipes and stash tins but the stables bit is ace, has some really good vintage clothes shops and lovely other stuff.

"All affected traders will be welcome to return to the new buildings once they are completed, and will benefit commercially from the market becoming an even more attractive destination for shoppers."

No it fucking won't be

It's terrible news and bullying has been going on for ages
The rents have been rocketing over the last 7 years forcing many of the most interesting and unique independent traders out of business.
Someone I knew and used to buy from regularly turned up one Saturday to be told that the rent had doubled. As she didn't have the cash on her there and then the 'bouncers' actually quite scary and aggressive ex soldiers from former Yugoslavia, took all her stock and threw it out onto the street.

It's important that anyone who wants to buy stuff from the stables market gets there pronto, before next Tuesday and spend some money and support the traders, it may be the last chance you get to pick up some great vintage clothing and bargains.

Not all of the vintage stalls will go, there will still be some hanging on, but the best of the bunch are in the stables so get yourselves down to Camden pronto.

The Stables is the best bit of Camden market. The rest is just globalised grunge crap.

I've been following this over the years and signed petitions and whatnot. It absolutely idiotic replace the best part of Camden Market with a shopping centre. I know, many people are very down and blase about Camden Market, but the stables was the best spot for vintage clothes in London and now it will be gone. :(

yeah, there's a lot of vintage shops dotted around london but none of fthem seem to be as good as the stables.

a lot of them are going too - Radio Days is on its way out - and Steinbeck and Tolkein is closing on 25th september. I'm considering taking a day off work to go down there and see if I can buy the sort of dress that I'll never, ever have an occasion to wear :)

they are definitely having a sale with lots off (like 70% apparently) but I don't know if that's covering all the designer/vintage/interesting stuff. Story was in Time Out last week - the rent costs have driven them out. Radio Days have just had enough I think and can't find anyone to sell the business to so are shutting shop.

it's a real shame, especially as there is so much demand for vintage stuff at the moment. wow retro and beyond retro have both recently opened large new branches in very central london locations, so it's sad that whilst some are obviously thriving so many are having to close through no fault of their own.

Doesn't surprise me. The whole area has been being turned into Camden Theme Park for years. :(

I'm sure the new buildings will look shiny and sexy like the plans I saw a few years ago for the redevelopment of the tube station (don't know if/when that's happening) but it's just all in the wrong place. Do up somewhere that's run down and grotty (in the wrong way!) not a thriving, unique bit of London.

both of those feel like a branch of Urban Outfitters to me - places like Radio Days are so unique it's a shame to lose them.....but it's the same old high street lament that's affecting any independent shop.

When the rents rocket like that it isn't down to "use it or lose it" - that's just traders being ousted (edit - although as far as I know Radio Days isn't going because of rent - although shops do keep closing on Lower Marsh don't they?)

I expect the internet has a lot to do with it as well - as with independent music shops.

i know what you mean, especially with wow retro, it's so clean and shiny in there, not like a vintage shop should be at all IMO. although they do have some nice stuff - i got my embroidered satiny bomber jacket from there.

and yeah the interent is bound to have a part to play - i've got a few bits from ebay myself. but that's not nearly as much fun as browsing a shop and finding something that leaps out at you and you can tell it's a perfect fit before you even try it on.

Ironically their approach obviously works though - they're the ones expanding while they treat their stock like a regular shop instead of something you have to dig around in the bottom of a bin for. I like the bin digging type of shop but can see why the other approach works from a retail point of view - anyway, I'm hardly a vintage freak so I may be talking rubbish. Pinkmonkey knows all about this :D

Actually - what's that one in Victoria called??? It's really good - I got a spotty tea dress from there a few years ago.....

I used to work in Camden Stables market. new management took over in summer 2002 and absolutely fucked the place. Got rid of all the 'fly stalls' , built those shitty units on dray walk and put the rents up by about 400%, pricing anyone who sold anything other than balinese carvings and the sort of crap you can get in any market worldwide.

They are trying to get rid of all the decent markets in London (Spital fields was ruined years ago) and Bethnal Green Road is virtually non-existant, indeed the Security wanks now have an office on it so noone can even set up!

it is an utter+total crying shame. Markets are what make a city. :(

yep. there used to be some good places in kensington high street market. but that went. there was a place called johnson's menswear (i think) that sold all sorts of rockin' clothes, and the sort of suits vic reeves would wear on big night out. it was an ace shop.

I hate this homogenisation of London.

The really bizarre thing about the new *cough* refurbished bits of Camden Market is how most of it resembles the shopping Malls of Tsim Tsha Tsui in Hong Kong. The size of the stalls, most of the stock and even the (mostly) Chinese stall holders are all exactly the same as in Hong Kong. Really really odd. <Makes mental note to take Jessiedog to see it when he next comes over so he can agree with me>

Kensington market was a great place to hang around as a youth. You could meet all sorts of people there, plus seeing stalls being run and selling things you were interested in gave encouragement to get off your arse and try to make or sell your own stuff.

It finally shut down in 2001. Lots of my friends used to work there and at Hyper Hyper across the road and I used to hang out there in the 80's.

Brick Lane is also a shadow of it's former self. Untill five years ago it was the best market in London. You still could get genuine bargains there, but now it's all swishy shops and cocktail bars.

AFAIK Cyber dog and the other units just there aren't going anywhere, at least not in the short term

The ones that will be going are the ones round the corner in the stables and the catacoombes

Some say they're giving up, many say "oh we're sorting somewhere out but we're not sure about exactly where", which I think means a) please don't haggle our prices down too much as we're not desperate, b) some options have been offered to us but they're not concrete c) er, well we don't know really

:(

I buy a lot of clothes at the market and a few years back I did very well buying certain niche items from the market wholesale (well at a big discount for buying in bulk) and selling them to US and Canadian buyers.

To be fair, many (but not all) of the Camden Traders don't have as much knowledge as would be helpful in terms of identifying rare and valuable designer pieces, types, legality and value of furs, how to care for and restore certain fabrics etc.

Also some are very used to B&M selling and don't feel confident about retailing on line.

Other problems have included big retailers like Top Shop moving in on the Canadian vintage wholesalers, and cherry picking the best vintage stuff.

To be fair, there are some incredible bargains to be had. I was last there a few days ago and found a perfect pair of 60s black alligator stilettos, stunning, I mean really special, in fabulous condition, and just the sort of thing that this month's Vogue is full of, for £10. If the trader had bothered to read Vogue or take notice of trends they would have known that they would have easily gotten £75 for them.

My advice is to get on down there pronto, some stalls will close after Sunday, some after Monday, then that will be that :(
