Advice wanted on what areas represent good value in price to quality ratio in the London area?
Also where is best to look to find them?
Is it true that South London offers better value?
Should large parts of East London be written off?
Is West London too expensive?
Any general advice wanted - rooms in the £100 and less bracket are most desirable!
Thanks
South and East are best for price, a lot depends on where you work, transport links etc (eg zone 4 is cheaper but you'll spend £100+ per month on a travelcard)
Why write off 'large parts of East London'?

No idea - people seem to have it in for that whole area, everytime I speak to people about London areas.

Plenty of posters on here live in East London and love it.

Well, my view is that nowhere in London represents good value for money and that on the whole London is a deeply unpleasant, overrated, overcrowded and insanely overpriced dump that is best avoided.
But that's not a very popular PoV on here and, of course, I'd never waste my 14000th post on a spot of London-bashing, would I? ;) :p :D

Depends what you mean by East.. trendy East is ok if you like that sort of thing, but a lot of East is fucking grim. See Children of Men for an example of Dagenham ;)
South is great in a lot of places and would be where I recommend, but it depends what you like.
Clubs? Posh, leafy areas? A bit 'vibrant'? Are you afraid of your own shadow?

It's best ignoring Roadie on issues like these - he likes Hull. Clearly something is wired funny in his noggin. Clipston boys are all like that.
buffet lunch = great name! :D
As others have said a lot depends on where you're working/studying/whatever else you do - ie where do you want to be able to get to from where you live, and how often will you being doing it.
Personally (and I would say this having lived in the area for the last 9 years) I'd look around Zone 3 South East London - Herne Hill, Tulse Hill, Forest Hill, Sydenham, Crystal Palace, Gipsy Hill type areas.
All these areas are on the overland train rather than the underground and are thus somewhat overlooked by a lot of people whose idea of London is governed by the tube map. However generally speaking commuting into London on the overground is fast, can be cheaper than the underground and is almost certainly more pleasant.
This area of London I also find to be leafier and more laid back than other areas of London and so is quite good for staying 'sane'.

Heheheheh :D
In fairness, I only dislike London as a resident. It's fine to visit.

To reiterate, you need to consider where you'll be working, as that will rule some areas out.
If you can live without the tube network (and get overland trains as far as victoria / london bridge / charing cross / wherever) you will get more for your money.
