Slightly concerned about the comment in the review:
"Plaistow is like Beruit on a "lets use up all our old ammo" day. "
There may be all sorts of secret Plaistow pleasures - but, failing that, there's always Plaistow Station. The District Line is your escape route.

It's a wasteland - I lived there for nearly 2 years. The black lion was the only decent pub I could find.
You can always get the tube a few stops to Upton Park and go to Green Street for a good curry,

Hop a couple of stops along to Barking.
Proper shopping area there. Or even better the train to Romford - big new shopping place.

You could spend a bit of time ruminating on how you pronounce 'Plaistow'?

It's Plar-stow.
The woman on the tube is wrong. It's not Place-stow.
Only people who eat pitta bread and mung beans say Place-stow.

it is a very good pub and would still be a good pub if it were somewhere more....salubrious.

Can't say I've ever heard anyone call it Place-stow.

The recorded station-naming message thingy on District Line trains does.

why are you actually spending time there? any particular reason?
I lived there, on and off, for about six years
I'm aware of the obvious hypocrisy in this statement, but the best thing to do in Plaistow, once you arrive, really is leave.
A pox upon't.

It certainly used to.
In the past couple of years, I believe it's stopped.

i woudl have called it that. "Plar-Stow"?? it sounds like one of those far away little inbred villages where they say everything wierd.
It certainly used to.

I'm glad to hear that's the case. I was starting to doubt myself, as I've been through Plaistow many times in the last couple of years and I'm sure I would have noticed it.

:)
Well the East London cemetery is meant to be quite cool.. you're also within walking distance of Bazelgette's classic Victorian pumping station.. Open your eyes and live alittle.
:)
Drink in the Black Lion. I was there just the other night. On a sunny evening there's a decent pub garden. They do food but not always. There's the occassional fight to watch but generally the atmosphere is ok.
Black Lion good pub. Other Plaistow facts - David Essex, Reg Varney and Honor Blackman born in this area. Ian Drury Plaistow Patricia great song.
Stratford not far away - good pub is the King Edward.

so we ended up in Edmonton Green instead. it ws the grimmest place i have ever been to. my last memory of the place before getting back on the train will be the man crouched shitting on the small piece of grass land outside.
Act lika teef.
Get up to Dagenham Heathway for a dog fight.
Make black people miserable.
