Ooh decisions... it's the Lovebox weekender so I might not make the fair at all... If I can get a cheap ticket from a tout. Defo be in the Albert on Sat night though :) And I might even be lazy & make the fair on Sun after all... way closer to my house than Lovebox.

I wonder if Urban85 will be hosting their Alternative Vegatable Juggling contest at the Village Pond at the Lambeth Country Fair? I'm looking forward to seeing the Bob Monkhouse tribute band. Such a shame Brixham is so far to travel to. I wish it was all closer to London.

Catch me near that cider stall anywhere later than 2, both days -- maybe earlier :p

Can't make the Albert afterparty sadly, I've been kidnapped to out of town on Saturday evening by non Urbanites :(
Can the Send Arms near Woking (look, it's a houseparty afters, right?) handle a cidered up smoked up Country Show casualty?? I intend to test this hypothesis .... :D

But I'll be back at the Fair on Sunday -- best lineup is Sunday -- Levi Roots and Horace Andy and King Tubbys Sound System -- basslines!!

I'm hoping that Urbanites might be able to update me with any real news on the state of Brockwell Park (rather than admittedly very plausible speculation :p ) ... I thought myself yesterday that heavy rain today might jeopardise the event ... with more rain forecast throughout today, cancellation might be a distinct possibility??

And the latest update to the BBC 5 dayer for London (http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/5day.shtml) for the first time shows Sunday worse thsan Saturday ....

It won't be cancelled. There's thunder, lightening and torrential rain outside now - and I can still see people setting up marquees etc - most of them are up already and they were doing sound checks all day yesterday.

Let's just ignore the rain and hopefully it will piss off... :D Can there actually be any more rain left - it's mental at the moment!

And that would be a terrible shame but checking the weather every 5 mins isn't going to change anything (especially considering the reports might be wrong). Best thing to do is see what it's like outside on Saturday morning innit :)

William of Walworth
20-07-2007, 10:58
Well you got the Bob Marley band wrong, so it wouldn't be entirely surprising if you got King Tubby wrong too! :p

Did you actually see why I made that mistake? I'd only seen the one line reference to a name on a list at that poiint, and given that the real Marley boys were in the country recently (I saw em at Glasto) anyone can err.

I knew perfectly well that King Tubbys Soundsystem do not feature a dead man though ;)

Not in a good mood to say the least ... The festival season's been really shit for weather so far, and I'm now beginning to fear that London's best free event is going to be called off. I feel really sorry for the poor fuckers at the Glade and Eastern Haze, and I'm biting my nails about prospects for WOMAD next weekend as well. Whether or not it rains makes a HUGE difference and anyone who says it doesn't matter is certifiable IMO ...

The festival season's pretty short lived, and it's getting washed out, I can scarcely recall a worse. Whats the betting we have a scorching Indian Summer in September and October when there's almost no more festivals left. Cunts. Whoever the cunts are. :(

So, yes, folks, thats why it's important to me -- Festivals are a big part of my life. Sorry if you find that boring.

Don't assume.

I hope gaijin's right, she may very well be. But I do remember one of the later Legalise Cannabis Fairs, on this very site, being postponed from an early day to a later one because of torrential rain. Nothing to do with the Police or petty Council objections that time!

I go to more festivals than anyone else. I'll get a fine and sunny one in the end, but it won't be this w/e very likely. Can you stop ganging up on me please.

You are right that things can improve quite rapidly in 24/48 hours, and unexpectedly, it's possible if unlikely. Maybe I'll find it easier to look on the brighter side for that prospect if you all stop getting at me about it. There IS a risk it will get cancelled, even if only an outside one. But I'm sure you're looking outside the window right now, conditions are exceptional, Biblical even, and pretty much unprecedented in recent times for mid/late July.

Who is this 'we'?

YOU may not like it, others, elsewhere and here, have said several times that the fact that I'm prepared to do the boring job of checking boring weather forecasts before festivals, is in practical terms useful -- if irritating when prospects are negative.

Have you seen the Music Forurm today -- down at the Glade (Berkshire), it's on a knife-edge whether or not the whole thing doesn't get the plug pulled, because the site's more than half flooded. Thatcham railway station was apparantly closed earlier today, and they were turning punters away from the gates.

OK that fest has started already, and no official word yet on whether the gates get reopened. But would you rather people didn't discuss it?

Things have improved here now, maybe the LCS is as gaijin reassured, looking less likely to be cancelled, but I resent being had a go at as a 'scaremonger' for suggesting that very real possibility -- the rain was exceptionally heavy. It's not normal conditions at all.

But maybe the worst is over in which case

I hope you'll all have a good time at the LCS tomorrow  and I hope I'll be in a better mood too, but you're not helping in the moment,

Neither am I guess, but hunting on packs is neither nice nor necessary.

I was wrong in retrospect to think the LCS might be cancelled but given that the Glade NEARLY was, and given the Biblical drenching we were getting at the time, I wasn't being that outlandish.

Get off my fucking back FFS. I brought it on myself to an extent, but still ..... Thanks to gaijin for being a bit more understanding.

It's just a statement of (near) fact, not a fucking boast. And given the number I do get to, that should make me less interested in the weather prospects why, exactly.

Find out for yourselves next time. At least you'll be spared the tedium of weather chat, even at the risk of your event being cancelled ...

Try reading the post properly? It's perfectly inderstandable, if somewhat intemperate under a lot of provocation!

It's a good job I have no idea WTF 'Amplex' is.

Actually you do have a point though. I am at times obsessed with festival weather -- I rarely holiday abroad in places where good weather is gurenteed, and heavy rain and mud can come close to spoiling a lot of a festival.

For the last time -- -- if this morning's rain had continued to the same extent and had it not stopped (unexpectedly I might add!!) , the Glade would almost certainly have been cancelled, and the LCS could very well have been at risk too. It's only because it's me who's pointing that out that you don't want to hear.

But the weather's quite nice now -- the idea that our Brockwell fun might be off was getting me down, as only gaijin had the perception to see properly. But it now looks like we should (?) be OK.

Lets leave it -- try and be nicer to me tomorrow and I will too :)

I'm away for the time being. I really don't deal well with being attacked en masse. Have a think about why.

I'd hate to see you in a footy changing-room where piss-taking is merciless and unending

As ever, Batemans XXB for you William

:)

Thanks, appreciated -- Chucklehead for me -- :)

Orang Utan, just sometimes, not EVERYTHING is my responsibility. I've made an arse of myself sure, but I really was trying to raise the very real possibility that the LCS might be called off -- you don't like rain yourself either right?

For this, I had the piss ripped mercilessly en masse.

OK the possibility of shutdown has receded now, but the Glade did come pretty close (it seems) to being shut down this morning, we weren't to know the rain (really heavy here too) wouldn't last, forecasts aren't always wrong and the strong likelihood was that the rain could continue.

I'm as happy as anyone else that it hasn't and that for now, the thing looks likely to go ahead :)

Can we be nice again now?

SubZeroCat
20-07-2007, 14:59
But the weather's quite nice now -- the idea that our Brockwell fun might be off was getting me down, as only gaijin had the perception to see properly. But it now looks like we should (?) be OK

See? :) No need for the doom and gloom panicking earlier innit :)

Will, don't take it as a personal attack - we just don't want constant weather reports that's all.

??

Total exaggeration. You had the piss ripped a bit. Most people just expressed the fact that they found the constant weather reports boring or annoying (especially considering how innacurrate they can be) and advised you to wait until Sat morning to see how the weather was and decide from there.

William of Walworth

I disagree really, the rain really was exceptionally heavy at the time -- I've rarely seen heavier in July. and reports from the Glade were just starting to come in too.

Will, don't take it as a personal attack - we just don't want constant weather reports that's all.

It was the en masseness of it. It was unrelenting for a bit, All I was trying to do was be of help. Clearly ineffectually so apols for that. But still!

I was still right to raise the possibility earlier, whether you like it or not. ca. 40 to 50mm of rain in a morning is NOT NORMAL for July!

If I posted that link I'd be moaned at for going on about it. You do it to piss take and no doubt there'll be lols all round at my expense. And now Crispy's joining in ...

Besides, I though forecasts were always wrong ;)

If it's raining or if it's muddy, there's no fucking way I'm spending the day outside!

Ah, the fabled fiery red-haired Brits, of largely Celtic descent, perfectly adapted to this fair isle's blustery and cold conditions.

...or carrot-topped mud-averse shandy drinking wusses that can't take the sun or rain.

Let you, the people, decide....

Still, tomorrow does look a little shaky. I may just pop down to see Jahnny Brixton, who's been pestering me (unsuccessfully) to buy his cd for many a year - he's a Welsh (Newtown IIRC) Brixtonian at heart - and save most of my energy for Sunday.

It's weather for ducks and geese. Which is fortunate given that it's the Country Show. Wellies on, waterproofs set to max .... sorted.

tarannau
20-07-2007, 15:35
Christ. I only wore wellies for the first time in over 2 decades this year, after a case of trench foot nearly ended my enjoyment of Glastonbury. No real raincoat of note either, but it's a tougher situation when you're sleeping in a tent an hour's walk away, with nigh on 200,000 staggering casualties churning up the path in front of you.

Worst case scenario and it'll rain tomorrow, forcing me into the nearby pub. Shame that. That's about as boy-scout prepared as I am though.

Things have improved here now, maybe the LCS is as gaijin reassured, looking less likely to be cancelled, but I resent being had a go at as a 'scaremonger' for suggesting that very real possibility -- the rain was exceptionally heavy. It's not normal conditions at all...

Those countryside wimps down in Oxfordshire have cancelled (ahem, 'postponed') the Truckfest (parts of site under 2 foot of water), and the other countryside wimps in Berkshire came very very close to cancelling the Glade (general mudbath, with stage closures, and road and station closures nearby -- just as the site was opening up).

Hence my entirely tedious and boring and unreasonable and 'scaremongering' suggestion before midday ;) that the LCS might be at risk too.

But aided by some London-friendly and unexpected dryness and sunshine this afternoon, us Urban lot can pretend to be rustic-hardcore. With the aid of cider ...

Ahh that's a shame. We hit the cider tent stall thing...big scary bouncy castle @£2.50 for ten minutes..urm..vegetable animals of course, then saw a really excellent band on the main stage, was dancing, hanging out with some old friends and their viciously stong spliffs then finally fell over on the village green..
(before the vomiting began....oh the shame, in Brixton too...am really out of practice, have become a total lightweight)
My mate was also trying to score, but their was definately not much of that going on...
Anyways, remember looking to buy some food and everything had shut down early....

Oh hell, I didn't realise when we saw you that you hadn't been already at the cider tent - we could have showed you where... Sounded like the foal was up for heading home though. Lovely to see you both though :)

No worries - Ms T had shown me just before I bumped into you but as you surmised the foal had had enough fun for one day (he slept from 7.30pm until 10.40am  - must take him exciting places more often :D )

Conversation I had with the guy from chucklehead earlier:

Him: Sorry mate we've run out. We really tried this year too, we had a whole extra chiller trailer.

Me: Do you sell a bit more down here than at other event?

Him: Err, yes. You guys are kind of big into this down here arent you?

:D :D

I've got FOUR pints left (having dranken at least six today!!!) , the stuff that I didn't drink is now in the fridge, and I'm taking that 4 pt. container to WOMAD on Thursday ... :p

Unlikely, but if anyone heard the choruses of ‘Where’s your sheep, where’s your sheep, where’s your sheep’ sung around the Family Arena, ‘twas me conducting various kids in a peoples’ revolt – the sheepdog display people only brought ducks to herd.

Elsewhere, mental images of the firm yet unrestrained Ann-Marie - straight-backed and astride her Stallion of Substance - will remain with me for some time . . . two such finely proportioned beasts I’ve rarely seen . . . That was one shite display though.

Punch and Judy was a winner, as was Smokey the Fire Engine and Mega Minis. We fairly sampled the Medium Sweet Chucklehead Cider to general acclaim.

Six hours of the Show on Sunday and a huge success for everyone – though forehead currently looks like it spent yesterday afternoon in a microwave.

Would have liked to meet some of you, but prob impracticable with so many children wanting to be in so many places at the same time . . .

That was the first time I actually looked round the whole thing rather than just sitting by the stage getting pissed. The sheep shearer was great.

Didn't go on the Sunday, I felt too rough from getting pissed in The Albert on Saturday night. Feel midly dissapointed not to have seen Horace Andy, but hey, I'll live. I went to the shop on Sunday night to get some ice cream and saw an excellent band playing in the Hob garden! Very funky and jazzy! Looked like an excellent atmosphere too, a proper Brixton vibe. I didn't stay long, I was on a mission to get the Hagen Dazs back to the missus...

horace andy was great. the dog show was great as usual, i like how he does the same jokes every year, it is reassuring. goose herding fairly impressive. norfolk folk band ok.... it was wierd how amazing the weather was when all of the rest of the country seemed to be under water, i felt a bit guilty.

Gosh, I may be suffering now, but that was very good. Spent two very pleasant days in some occasionally brilliant sunshine.

Horace Andy was definitely worth the wait - the stage area was probably the most packed and happiest that I've ever seen at the Country Show. Departed drunk and smiling both days, wibbling pleasantly along.

Blagsta - that Jazz Jam's down the Hob every Sunday. Not entirely my bag - sometimes the parping sax gets to me a little - but it's a pleasant enough addition. And using the over-ornate smokers' gazebo as a bandstand makes me laugh a little too.

The highlight of the 'summer' so far - I had a lovely weekend, sitting around, drinking cider and chatting with some fantastic people.
(though I was alarmed at one point to find WoW talking to my boss about how much I post on U75  :p)

My lazy eye has started flickering uncontrollably for the first time in 20-odd years. So that must have been damn fine country show action.

Very tired today. All those farm animals and country air must have knackered me right out...
