Mmmmmm yummy. I went for dinner there the other night and it was yum yum yummy and very reasonably priced esp considering the massive portions.... I've been there a few times now and although I loves it it'd be great to have some recommendations for some other places that do yummy grub around brixton... restaurants or delivery...

bt I have already experienced the joys of Khans and Pizza Ring :)

I made my own gyozas for tea last night. Yummy, but not as good as the ones I bought in the shops.

La Mazorca (or whatever it's called now). Lovely South American food, reasonably priced. Just after Brixton Academy, on the main road.

Fujiyama - just off Atlantic Road... noodles are pretty good but their sushi is lovely (and cheap!)

Dog Star for mexican - huge portions of goodness :)

Oh yes indeed - don't bother drinking or having a night out at dogstar, but el panzon is justly famous for the mexican food.

I don't think I've ever actually eaten at Gyoza yet.

Fujiyama is indeed lovely and I've yet to try El Panzon, La Mazorca and Ichiban (food rules )

I loves it tho :)Fujiyama is much more than just fish though - they do the whole range of japanese food. The menu is so extensive I reckon it's impossible not to like something on there. I also recommend Ichiban Sushi round the corner (again, it's not just sushi - a variety asian food in there) on Atlantic Road and Cafe Provencal in Herne Hill.

I reckon your flatmate is a decent cook as well though ;)

What did you have? I recommend the (can't remember the name) one with rice, beans, plaintain, steak and salad stuff. Nice, home cooked food

There is a severe lack of good places to eat on the hill though. Went to that negril place and it was shockingly over priced. £6.50 for a tiny chicken burger with no side that took about 30 mins to come. Not had chance to try their BBQ yet. Damn this infernal rain!

Ditto what Hatter said. I went with The Boy who also doesnt like fish but not a problem on the smelly side.. lots of other aromas to keep his nose occupied whilst you tuck in. mmmmm lovely :)

Well it's not really a fast food place. 30 minutes is quite normal in a restaurant and I doubt you'd get a burger for less than £6.50 in a restaurant outside Wetherspoons. You're right that it should come with a side though :)

Also didn't think much of La Mazorca.

I like Fujiyamas though.

I also like Asmara, but Ethiopian/Eritrean food isn't to everyone's taste.

Love Ethiopian.

I've never had Ethiopian food outside of Ethiopia. Is it the same sort of thing? Sit around a communal table affair and eat with the Injera and your hands?

Or is it like some sort of Tapas way of serving it up?

Does anyone know of a proper traditional Ethiopian restaurant that does serve it up like they do there?

It's a bit like that yes, but not as good as Lalibalaz (sp?) on Fortess Road up North London

Asmara is pretty good, particularly that vegetarian combo dish everyone eats in the fasting month (can't remember what it's called).

I have seen it served in a tapas-type way but not in Asmara. They also have honey wine sometimes

Traditional - with the meal served on an Injera and the smoky stuff and all that. It's a bit scruffy though.

Might have to give that a try. Let's derail this thread into an ethiopian food thread

Oooh.. Cool. I was put off the ones in Kentish Town as they looked like Tapas restaurants from outside :D

Last time I had Ethiopian food, I was sat round one of these with some Minister for Education and various other people:

... and hadn't realised the significance of eating with my left hand. Even when pointed out to me, I was very embarrased in the end!!

Not always! But the only scruffy place I like is Murch Masalla

Don't like Fujiyama very much - overpriced and under-tasty. Ichiban is far superior. Gyoza used to be good but seems to have gone downhill a bit - the soup is really tasteless, for example...

Mirch Masala in Norbury's had a makeover/extension and they've just opened a new one in Croydon. Not been to Tooting one for a while, but Norbury branch is simply the best there is. The ginger chicken is unbelievable.

Yeah the Norbury branch is the better one - went there recently and it made me moan in ecstacy

I love Mirch Masala, especially since they took over next door and made it much flasher in there - on their reo-pening night they served free meals all round.

The traditional curries in there may not be all that special. But the fresh breads from the Tandoor and the grilled tandoori chops are to die for. If only I could leave there without eating way too much - like Orang I was groaning when I left there last, albeit mainly because I had eaten far too much.
