i live in the street, but haven't noticed a new coffee place next to the bookcafe (near CHL) in rushcroft rd looks which looks well cool. it only opened today though.

they do very yummie looking cakes and have comfy sofas. shame i just came from having a coffee otherwise i had tested it out.

brixton recently gets better and better innit?

Ah that's aright then - a very friendly woman came up to me with a leaflet advertising a new coffee shop on Rushcroft Road this morning and I had visions of a new business stuck in the madness of that road. Stop in for a crafty cappuchino and watch the casualties go by, supping lattes to the limping smackheads.

Almost glad to hear that it's on the corner. Apparently they're doing a cake and coffee special deal for £2 at the moment.

*wonders if should have a third coffee today...?

but sorry it is not on the corner...it's next to the one on the corner. so it is actually on rushcroft road.

Popped in there yesterday on the way to work. Horribly overpriced – I paid something like £3.70 for a small coffee and an almond croissant. And then I had to chuck away half of the croissant because it didn't taste that fresh

It looks very nice inside, but I'll stick with Caffe Nero :)

Ooh, I like a nice coffee place, I'm going to give it a try at some point...

Went their once. The coffee came in a cardboard cup because they can't wash proper china cups and the bloke told me off for taking a picture.

Think I'll stick to the Phoenix/Lounge/Ritzy.

Very expensive, but nice all the same.

Very interesting interior too.

Have to bump this thread because I made the grave mistake of going to Max Oliver's for breakfast this morning and it was appalling.

We thought we'd treat ourselves to a nice breakfast at the Lounge, but it wasn't open so – in spite of my overpriced, stale croissant the other week – we gave Max Oliver another chance.

What a mistake. We ordered scrambled eggs on toast and a couple of coffee, thinking it wouldn't take too long because there was hardly anyone in there. After 25 very long minutes, breakfast arrived – stale ciabatta, wilted lettuce (who the hell eats lettuce for breakfast?), an olive (Jesus wept), insipid cheap-tasting potato salad, watery value ham and the most rubbery microwaved scrambled eggs I've ever had the misfortune to eat.

Two breakfasts, two small coffees – £12.40 :(

I don't mind paying for a decent-quality fancy breakfast, but these people are really taking the piss.

Skim is using understatement. It was atrocious -- biggest fucking rip-off breakfast I can ever remember having!

Clearly they don't have a kitchen as our meals were very slowly made right at the front counter with the obvious ding of the microwave. Fair enough if you aim to be just a coffee and biscuits cafe, but then don't promote an eggs and ham breakfast right at the top of your menu!

If they're still open into 2008 I'd be really surprised. Absolutely deserves to fail.

I feel like we're that couple on the Catherine Tate show, "They charged us £12.40 for microwaved eggs and small cups of coffee, the dirty bastards!"

I had coffee and a pain au chocolat in there yesterday. The pain au chocolat was served cold, so I asked for it to be heated. What's the point of pain au chocolat if the chocolat is not squidgy? My coffee was only filled about half way up the cup, the rest was foam. The foam is supposed to crown the cup, like a souffle!

They do now have proper china plates and cups. And the lady who was working there was proper lovely.

They had lots of magazines on offer, mostly those celeb porn mags.

I think it's a franchise, isn't it?

I think I'm going to open my own coffee shop. Get a few battered sofas, stick some posh cordial in the fridge, sell some overpriced organic confectionery, scatter some copies of Dazed & Confused around the place and play loud jazz for the benefit of my hapless laptop-touting punters.

Oh, and I must have free wi-fi access ;)

Two breakfasts, two small coffees – £12.40 .Yowch! What a rip!

If you ever fancy a cheaper, tastier meal, you can always join the Phoenix lunch club: we meet once a week and you can bring your young' un in with no bother!

i still haven't been in there yet :o

my bf went one morning for coffee and cake and mentioned steep prices too,

however it looks lovely from the outside and may be a good place to have (only) a coffee in. in fact i will review it this week or early next. although it might not be for breakfast (see skim)

anyone knows who opened it? (i am wondering if the lady who had an art gallery next door there before had anything to do with it) i doubt it is cooporate..?

It does look nice from outside, very cosy, but their size may prove to be a problem – when we were in there two separate groups (of about six people each) came in, looked at the tiny size of the place, and walked out again, presumably because it was too small.

And how was the olive?

Better than the eggs. They were atrocious. You have to be desperately hungry to eat an olive for breakfast, but that's what I did :D

Had a coffee there the other day. Was very nice. Not cheap, and not entirely sure of the retro shabby chic look. But I suppose if we moan about Starbucks et al, it is a bit rich to whinge at the opposite extreme.

MMM I am in said place...now. Coffee ok. Croissant ( ham and cheese) served cold..after i had asked for it hot. When it came back not up to much.

I liike the ambience... however I prefer tasty grub and a good cofee.

I really like it in there. I am a cake addict and they do WONDERFUL cakes! The ones suitable for vegans are just melt in the mouth fantastic. Never tried hot food there tho. and its good to get away from the chains to somewhere different & homely.

I should have known better - given the general opinion on this thread - but checked out this cafe today.

Plus: huge cup of tea, very comfy, lots of newspapers, very very tasty carrot cake (almost as good as mine!) and even tastier roti.

Minus: It took FOREVER for our drinks/snacks to be made and when, having waited and watched every other person be served I, very politely, went up to see if it might help if we chose a less labour-intensive snack (instead of the roti) - I got the distinct impression the guy was pissed off with me.

Gaijinboy had a similar impression when he earlier went to inquire about the tea/coffee - thinking he had made a mistake perhaps and was supposed to have waited at the counter for it! To be fair to the guy in there, the place was rammed and people just kept coming and coming - and this was around 4:30pm on a Wednesday.. I expect he was quite stressed.

Oh - and the toilet was a bit manky - which always worries me a bit.

Biggest minus though was the price - it is SO SO expensive. We had just been to the registry office to give legal notice of marriage so we just decided to pay the price since we were there - but honestly - it's just amazingly overpriced. That being said, it was so crowded that obviously the market for it is there - even at those prices!

There was a guy in there on his computer practising tying knots from an internet tutorial page with a large roll of string and watching Star Wars online! :D

I went there a while ago for a coffee and it was alright in a kind of ultra boho, laptops-out, 'let's hang out' kinda sense if that's your thang.

The coffee was good and not that expensive.

It was the roti that I found excessively expensive - £6 for a small wrap with potatoes and peppers - it was basically a warm sandwich with not very expensive fillings. It was absolutely delicious but overpriced I thought.

But, as I said, many people clearly disagree given how busy it is in there.
