View Full Version : Good hairdresser in the area?

Having recently moved into the Brixton/Herne Hill area I'm trying to find a reasonable and reasonably priced hairdresser. I've phoned up a couple and been quoted £40 and £32 for a trim which seems quite steep compared with what I've been used to in Somerset. It may be that £32-£40 is standard in London, but it would be good to know. Seems like it could really add up if you have to go every few weeks... There's also the sticky issue of whether the hairdressers around here divide themselves unofficially along lines of "black" or "white" haircutting and would I be laughed out of the shop if I went into one of the afro ones!

If anyone knows of a good hairdresser could you let me know?

I think that might just be how much it costs. I think some people rate that Shotgun Reloaded in Herne Hill - but dunno how much it costs.

I have been to an afro-european hairdressers in Brixton and it was made fairly clear that I wasn't welcome - but that may well have been that particular hairdressers. I used to get my nails done at the main nail/hair salon in the middle of the market which actually does seem to be afro-european in clientele, so I guess they're happy doing white hair.

It does piss me off that the hairdressers seem to be so clearly divided in that way - not least because many of the black hairdresser's salons tend to be open much later and look more fun.

I use Willie Smarts in Clapham - on the Pavement... there's quite a few around there, and on Clapham High Street...

The price you've been quoted is par for the course, but should include a wash and a good coffee. There's one on Clapham High Street that's much less - around £15 IIRC.

I have been to Shotgun Reloaded once and I did think it was good, definitely better than average. Just find my hair grows very fast and I'm not used to paying as much as this. I'll have to pull my finger out and get a job!!

I always use Exstatic in Kennington. The owner, Fodoulla, cuts hair really well. It is around the £35 mark though.

Hair by Fairy, in Covent Garden, does haircuts for £15 according to their website - haven't had one there myself, but it's such an incredibly image-conscious place that I assume their hairdressers must be pretty good. A bus ride away but a lovely area to visit!

Probably good if you've got short hair and don't trust non-big salon hairdressers to know the proper technique.. once bitten, twice shy!

I used to get my hair done at Redeye on Acre Lane (no. 182 ish). I would generally be the only white person that ever went there. Roy/Ray who owns it cuts european hair. He used to charge me £20 but I expect it's gone up.

He was as good as anyone I've used. :)

02072745509 and ask for Roy. say hello from the Scottish girl who used to live upstairs.

I like the sound of Hair by Fairy, sounds good value. Might get the bus up there and check it out...
