View Full Version : The Isles Of Scilly
As my walk along the South West Coast Path (http://www.urban75.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=209039) was a total disaster, I've decided to go to the Scilly Isles instead.
Next Monday through to Thursday. Got in a nice-sounding B&B for £25 a night and am planning on lots of walking and lots of pubs. :)
I've not been for years - but it looked like this when I was there last.

I'm really excited about this. That's all. :)
Where ya staying?
Actually I need a package delivering are you flying or boating? :D
A guesthouse just outside of Hugh Town, St Mary's - going over on the Scillonian.
Weather forecast's promising ... :
You going this monday or the one after?
No-one expects the spanish inquisition :D
This Monday.
And no, I'm not 'taking a package' for you. :D
I've seen that advert with the bloke in customs and the toy fluffy bunny.
Get someone else to smuggle yer drugs for ya! :D ;)

Drugs? How very dare you :D It's some stuff my brother in law said he'd tout round a couple of galleries for me but it won't be dry by this monday. I'm just being tight and thinking about the postage.
BTW don't bother eating at the Turks Head on Aggie it's gone shit :(

"Stuff", eh? ;)
"won't be dry"

I'm out of the loop with drug lingo these days, clearly.

No way! That used to be my favourite pub in the whole world, pretty much. :(

Me too. It's been taken over by some gastro chef  I had a major strop there in May :D All I wanted was quiche and chips and a pint but everything comes with a fucking coulis.
Ah, that's a bummer.
That pub's got the best view I've ever seen from a beer garden.
I hope the beer's still good there - I was intending spending a good chunk of the holiday crashed out there enjoying a few pints of 'Three Sheets' and all those other nautically-pissed sounding beers they do.
I'll take me sarnies. ;)

Indeed - this was the view from the beer garden in May :)

The beer is still the same and I think John Dart's wife is still making the pasties.
I used to live on St Mary's - what guest house are you staying at? (pm me if you want or tell me to mind my own fucking buisness :D)
The Sage House - just opened recently, by all accounts. Run by a lady called Sabina - sounded nice on the phone.
Bloody difficult booking - I'd pretty much resigned myself to camping on St Agnes before I found this one - and then it turned out to be the cheapest one of the lot. :)

:D
Sage house was the old folks home. The council pulled its funding very recently. I didn't know she'd turned it into a guest house. I did wonder where you'd managed to get a last minute booking in July.

That'll do for me, then. :)

You're fucking joking!
Ahh, the good old days when we had sunshine and the boats had no wheelhouses :D I moved from there 15 years ago.

No :D It'll be very nice :)

Give Scilly a stroke for me. I had the best and worst times of my life there but it always feels like I'm going 'home' :)
Will do. :)
This is the fourth time I've been now. I love it there. :)

No, I moved there when my eledst was a yr old. It's a fab place for a holiday and I'm always sad when I have to leave but living there absolutely did my head in.
A tip for camping at the garrison = if you're on the scillonian just get straight off the boat and get to the campsite as fast as you can (they'll deliver your luggage for you) - one of you go to the office to let them know you're there and the other one go and grab a good sheltered picth and a picnic table or two. The picnic tables make all the difference to a decent holiday :D Maybe get a taxi up (it's a fucking steep hill as well) to make sure you get the advantage  If you're not able to get a table ask the people who've already nabbed them when they're leaving and set your alarm :D
the most beautiful place I'd seen in the uk -
Totally agree - it's in a different league to anywhere else I've been in this country. :)
I like these fellas that hang out there, too:

I used to go there every year for my family holiday.
My mum ran over Mr Wilsons foot when I was in the buggy :D
Bill Oddie used to always be around twitching in bushes an all.
Loved going to Penzance and catching the helicopter to the islands
Very, very beautiful place and would love to go over again some time in my life.

Until he got banned (allegedly :D)
Until he got banned (allegedly :D)
'Bill Oddie Goes Wild'
No shit. :D
The story is that he was so obnoxious to hotel and bar staff that they told him to get off the island and never come back (Tresco I think it was)
ALLEGEDLY :D

scilly lovers - what's your best beach?
Depends on the weather. They're all nice (though porthcressa and little porth get their fair share of weed and flies. IMO the best beaches are on St Martins
So, NVP - where you to?
Has Sabina locked you in the cellar?
Just got back.
Bloody lovely, it was. :)
Only one day of rain that necessitated a mammoth session in The Mermaid. Could've been worse, like. ;) Otherwise, it was just great - managed to get out to all the main islands (including Samson this time - a first for me) and did loads of walking, lots of drinking beer and lots of talking nonsense to total strangers.
Sabine's place turned out to be very good value at £25 a night - comfy room, good brekkie, no hassles etc even if the place does still resemble a retirement home a bit too much. Not grumbling, though - not at all. I'd gladly stay there again at that price.
Very nice little holiday.
I'll post some pics later once I've sorted them out.
Good good :)
Look forward to the pics

Does Sabine advertise or is it word of mouth?

Phone the tourist information centre - they'll put you in touch.
Alternatively, her phone no's on that link of madzone's a page back. She's got guests right now but isn't booked up for the season unlike most of the other guesthouses.

NVP - whats the weather like in Cornwall at the mo? we'll be in scilly after the BGG early aug - would like a few days with no rain - if you could arrange it like:)
It's not bad at the mo' - last week or so's been pretty good to us. Not exactly beach weather but sunny with only occasional rain. Still fairly crap for July but, unlike the rest of Britain, it's not underwater so I ain't moaning.
Going back to the Scillies tomorrow for a day-trip - got a mate staying who's never seen it in all it's glory yet. :)

I always thought it was just me she doesn't like - it's a relief to hear someone else thinks she's a twat :D I don't particularly like her or her husband tbh
Those with an interest in Scilly might like to know that they can now keep up with island life via the islands' new permanent radio station. Radio Scilly 107.9, the world's smallest professional radio station, broadcasts from 7am to 10pm each day with a mix of music and local chat.
A live feed is available through www.radioscilly.com :)
