Do you want to carry out the repairs yourself? In which case Force Homecare in Brixton Road sell replacement sash cords.

No - I don't want to do it myself - I know exactly how that would end up ! - thanks for the tip though

Can't you put wooden blocks in the frame to stop them crashing right down? It's also an added security feature as you help prevent burglars using them to get in, although if you've got window locks you obviously don't need them

The joinery shop on Northcross Road, SE22 is very cheap but I wouldn't let them touch my windows. They make very cheap sash windows though.

If you do do it yourself, I once heard (decades ago - isn't it useful having us old-timers around) a radio programme where their DIY tip of the year was to use a pair of Mole grips if you're changing a sash cord - apparently it gives you the 'third hand' you find you need.

I know the glazing shop in Dulwich Road opposite Brockwell Park does it because I saw them doing one of a neighbours windows. Don't know what they charge for it. If you DO find someone good, please post who and how much some of mine are in a terrible state and really need new sash cords...
