I live in central Brixton. And was wondering if there are any nice pubs locally where children are welcome.

Not so much in the centre really, but down in Herne Hill the revamped gastropubs (particularly the The Regent and the pub formerly known as Ganleys/The Florence) are now three-wheeled pram city at the weekends. There's even a big outside space, devoid of all chairs and obstructions, that efffectively becomes a giant playground at the back of the Florence

They're all 'nice' pubs down there, but a little bland and more pseudo-restaurant than neighbourhood meeting point now. Which ain't necessarily a terrible thing; it'd just be better if they hadn't all turned so similar in a short space of time, leaving little real choice.

The pubs nearer to the centre are a mixed bag, but I'm sure if you're not at their busiest times they'd be quite welcoming.

Good for you. if I sound slightly cynical, it's only because I miss the sport at Ganelys and a few of the locals down there. A better mix of pubs in the area would be preferable

But for kids and a child-safe environment, it's a huge improvement. Enjoy.

Mango Land'in is very child friendly.
The place looked like a play group last weekend and they seem to have sorted thier food out.

Good one. Even if the manager(ess) can be a little, ahem, temperamental at times. A bit more informal than the Herne Hill options.

Mango Landing won a Best Beer Garden For Breast Feeding award. No really. I think it was an NCT thing. It's a nice place.

As Tarranau says, the Prince Regent is very child friendly. Saturday lunch with the little one in there is lovely.

Aye. The whole freakin area is going Crown and Greyhound on us.

Which, begrudgingly is a good thing at times as all of our friends are dropping sprogletts.

I've seen lots of peeps bring their kids into the Albert until around 7pm although it's not exactly a ton of fun for them.

The Canterbury is child friendly if they are well behaved. Especially tends to be a lot of kids around the big football games.

It's cool with the smoking ban, my friends can go for a drink with the kids in a proper pub without worrying about smoke

They should have that certificate taken away from them - I tried it the other day and they threw me and the lass out

I'll admit to feeling a little shiver down my spine when, laden down with three pints, I just managed to squeeze past a well-to-do mother's convention in The Florence. I overheard the line 'Araminta's very creative for her age' and I couldn't help but reminisce of smoky old Ganley's, its big screens of sport and its more varied clientele.

I don't know where I stand on this one. I like the idea of going out to a family-friendly pub and being able to enjoy a pint with my son around... on the other hand, I don't want dirty looks from yummy mummies as I sit puffing a few fags in the back garden.

I've only been out to the pub once since becoming a mum, we went for a drink in that big place in Dulwich Village (name escapes me). We were all out in the back garden with Alef's work colleagues and there was a smoker there who didn't want to have a cigarette because there was a baby around, yet I didn't want to stop her fun just because I'd brought a baby along. So I felt a bit awkward.

It's not just about smoking, it's about enjoying a few drinks in the company of adults without having to feel I'm at a playgroup. I don't visit pubs that often, but I'd rather stick to the family places when appropriate and leave the more adult establishments for when I want child-free fun. I'd never want to take my kid to the Albert, but I'd consider some of the places mentioned on this thread that are centred more around families.

I think I'll stick with the Lounge Bar for the time being – they've been very welcoming and they sell Fruli

I have to say, I come over all Daily Mail when I see people getting absolutely smashed in kid-friendly pubs, while their kids run amok

Clientele is a bit rah as you might expect, but it's alright and has a good garden. Def worth a visit if you're in the area.

And it's the only pub I've ever seen with a baby changing mat in the ladies' room :D
