Only 3 days to go before the big opening. :D
My own attendance times will be fairly fluid this year as I have various "starting times" over the summer.
But - I'm quite tempted - to get there for the grand opening at 6:45am on 2nd July (next Monday). Anyone else fancy it?

I'm going to making an effort with my lido haps this summer, although I'm going to be aiming to be there for about 6.45 opening so I'll prob be a bit early for the U75 breakfast club :(
As for monday, I have the day off, as does my boy so you'll be surprised to hear leaping out of bed on monday morning to get to the opening of the lido isn't too high up on my agenda for monday! :D

There'll be at least one week this summer where I'll be there at that hour - so I'll keep my eye open for colourful hair.. (is that you?)
Yeah - and pink socks! :D
Keeping your eyes peeled for a Powerpuff Girl tattoo will help an' all!

I'll probably be in skintight rubber and/or wearing giant blue plastic paddles on my hands... :D I think we should be able to spot each other... :D
i claim to be the first person to have used the new bycicle rags (sp?) last week saturday!
yay!
(hence i will give monday 0645 am a miss) but i think i will be there tuesday after 11.30 depending on work.
I am in but will remain a fluid attendee as well - like last year!! Some lovely mornings were had there.....

I actually prefer it in some ways when it rains because it's generally empty - it feels amazing, as the only person in the pool, to be under the water and see the rain hitting the surface.

You definitely will - very quickly - see an improvement. You might get away with leggings - try it and see. There seem to be a whole load of swimming costumes about now that are much more "coversome" than usual and no one seems to mind about them.
I can lend you a full length rubber wetsuit if you like... very flattering.. I love it... :( :D

I'm optimistically aiming for the first queue on Monday, but with the current weather its not going to be pleasant. Frankly I'm hopin for a repeat of last year when my GF dived in, surfaced and screamed a crude and loud profanity. The looks on the elder's faces was a picture. I've got me season card and wil be mincing past the bus queue in just a towel on my way home for a shower before work. Me Loves the Lido.

The waters at Tooting were pretty bracing this afternoon even when the sun showed its face. I only managed half a mile without a wetsuit.
Any brave souls going to Brockwell tomorrow a.m. may want to remember their swimming caps and/or put some brandy in that thermos of hot coffee for afterwards.:D

I'm afraid I can't come until it's high summer - and hot - I'm a wimpy Aussie, me... plus 6.45 - soooooo early! Is there any chance of weekend afternoons of lolling and the odd dip in and out? That seems so much more civilised than laps. PS. I can only do 1.5 laps before getting incredibly puffed and having to stop. I suck. I'd like to do this, though, I may consider later in the month.

Definitely up for weekend hot afternoons lazing by the pool, dipping in and out. It is a completely different atmosphere - more like a party in the sun!!
We just need some hot afternoons... :(

I'm going to have to wait till the end of the month before I start going again but v much looking forward to an outdoor swim again.
I'd like to come to this soon! Not tomorrow though!
Swimming outdoors in the sunny summer morn and then having coffee by the pool is SOO lovely. :)

The sun came out for the first day!
It was wonderful. A big queue at 6:45am and by 7pm the pool was rammed!! :D
It's difficult to get a real sense of what the majority of the building will be like. The pool is essentially unchanged. The Beamish and McGlue hut has moved to the side where the old indoor cafe used to be and they have a really large hut.
There are still teething problems. The changing rooms, sadly are very small - the ladies' has just three showers (cold at the moment) and a very small changing area with not great drainage and no lockers...... however they have built two outdoor showers to compensate. Personally I miss the old changing rooms but I guess this gym and spa is what is needed to ensure the future of the pool itself.
I was unable to buy a concessionary season pass and the guy seemed uncertain as to whether one would be available but promised to find out.
But - all the same old faces were there and the atmosphere was great.
Good turnout from urban too from people I recognise and I bet a load of people I don't. :)
Happy days!

Not sure how practical some of the use of space is and the changing rooms are going to be minging on a busy day.
But apart from that I didn't want to leave. The sun came out too.

I heard a rumour that a bigger changing room (possibly the old changing room:confused: ) would be opening at some point.
The old changing room will be the new gym. AFAIK through BLU - that's it for our changing rooms I'm afraid. I was told that the outdoor rooms were apparently added as a result of concerns voiced over the meagre facilities indoors.
The £145 will allow you to come and go as you please during opening hours.
From the BLU log:
"BLSG members expressed a consensus that, because of the very limited and unattractive space for showering and changing inside, it is essential to have warm and cold water in the outdoor showers. It is important that more than 3 people can shower at once---particularly for morning swimmers going to work. Swimmers do value a warm shower after a freezing cold swim. This matter was raised early in 2006 with Fusion as changing rooms were not adequate. We fear that we will all regret the failure to find a better solution. However, the provision of outdoor showers with hot water may help to balance things.
Fusion advises: The good news – We have relocated the positions of the outdoor showers in order for a warm feed can be accessed, also we
are looking to locate a couple up on the West side also.
The bad news – The showers this season will not be heated (or at least not until late) because of delays in the building programme imposed by water connection delays that were beyond the control of Fusion and its building contractor."

Well I was getting 2-3 swims in a day last summer, with a lot of loafing about by the side of the pool as well, so it worked out ok.
Getting the season ticket forces me to go more often and saves me trips to the physio - i think it works out at £12 per week this summer, which is probably a little bit more than what you'd pay for gym membership; if i didn't think of going to the gym as organised torture.
There's one down side with this exercise business - Its 3pm and I'm knackered.
Does anybody know the cut-off times for an early morning/late evening priced swim? There's no mention of them on the Lido site and their phone isn't being answered at the moment.

Early morning concessions apply until 10am and evening from 6pm until closing.
The concessions season pass is £101.50 which is ridiculous. I don't understand how the ordinary tickets have increased by such a small percentage whilst the season pass is over 25% more expensive.
The changing rooms are already dangerously slippy and very muddy.

What she said. Outside, one section of the newly landscaped lawn has been laid with turf, but there's a LOT of mud out there too, in particular surrounding the Lido building - especially with the current weather and the building works.

It's only really worth it if you plan to go during the day (outside of the cheap morning sessions) when it's £5+ AND if you're not going away (on holiday or whatever) during that time. It is a definite bonus having it because it means you don't have to queue on busy days (which can be horrid as it's usually when it's really really hot). It also means you can go for a proper swim in the morning and maybe go back later on in the day for a cooling down dip and dinner (which I used to do a lot last year - just pop in on the way home to cool off and get tea and a sanger).
Sadly, it's just too expensive for me this year - I'll be away during most of August too so it would be silly really.... :(
That being said - if the weather continues like this I won't be needing the lido to cool off/lounge around anyway... :(
I did try and ask this morning why the season ticket is so expensive - especially as this is a short season - but the guy I spoke to didn't seem to know.

just back from my first swim this year. It's not as cold as i thought it would be. Reasonable no. of peeps there. The entrance is tons better and the new row of bike stands is very heartening. Yes.
I went today and had a lovely time, but felt the lack of company. It's more of a social thing really than just going for a swim at the local leisure centre. I would be quite up for a weekend brunch club, or a weekday 6pm club (not realistic to get down there, swim and get to work before 9am). What's it like in the evenings, does it get packed or is it bearable?
It's the first time I've been to a lido since I used to get taken to Surbiton Lagoon as a nipper. There was a nasty moment when I got in, when for about a minute I thought I might die, but then it was ok. Mind, I negated all the benefit of the swimming by having chocolate cake at half time.
It felt like much harder work than last time I swam, and I wasn't sure if this was down to me having lost a scary amount of fitness in the few months I've not been swimming, or to the cold?

My first trip of the season as well on Sunday. I was *whisper* very impressed with Fusion. Great front of desk service, so much so that I departed with the cash for a season ticket.
I think that the new entrance opens up the Lido more from the outside. Seconded with the bike racks, in full view of the reception as well, so hopefully no bike thieving scum around the Lido from now on.
The water was fine - the showers were actually colder.
The new changing rooms are very sleak and modern, but also pitifully small. And what's with the hairdryers in the gents?
Should be there from most mornings from now on.

"Please try to be at Brockwell Lido at 7am on Tuesday 10th July. A swim will cost you only 70p! The press will be invited to record upwards of 70 swimmers swimming in the beautiful Lido at 7am on the 70th anniversary of its opening ceremony in 1937.
There will also be a chance to buy a copy of Out of the Blue, a book written in celebration of the Lido by Peter Bradley. Peter will be signing books at 9am and 2pm. There will also be cake cutting ceremony at those times.
The 70p swim goes on all day but please note that the pool will close early - at 5pm."

Best start to the day though - wouldn't swap it for a sanitised indoor swim. Warm showers? What are they?

Had another fab swim. I go at about 9:30 and there are rarely more than 3 or 4 of us. I've had it to myself a few times already!
Saturday's weather is looking good, so I'm thinking of an early start to get the lengths in and then some lazing - newspapers, tea, cake .... maybe even ...
..
..
CROSSWORDS and/or SQUABBLE!! - yes my life is that exciting!!
If anyone fancied coming and chilling out in the sun (still a hint of optimism left!) it would be great.
Just remembered - it's Tastebud's birthday picnic in the park from 2pm too!

Well I wouldn't want to set it in stone, but I am likely to want to get there for opening (10am) in order to get there before it gets busy. But I'd like to stay fairly flexible about it. The idea being that there will be much lounging around for quite some time - so arrival at all kinds of times by whoever would be fine... :) Anyone who is interested and doesn't have my tel no can pm me for it if you want to be sure of meeting up. But we'll be obvious I should think - just look for someone flinging a board and lots of letter tiles into the pool in anger....:D

ooh is it really forecast for 24C? Wonderful!! Come on Biddly - it won't be crowded till midday-ish, this is Brixton time after all!! Last Saturday it was hot and still hardly anyone there - less than early mornings in fact because none of the pre-work crowd were there... you said the same thing about the whole 7am, 70 swimmers thing and that was fine too!!

Isnt there more to life than just talking about meeting my preciousnesses?

I was thinking only this morning how 'flash' the showers looked, if a *little* cold. Hadn't thought about the non-slip suitability of them. Plus the changing rooms are getting crowded with any more than three people in.
Are the outdoor showers heated? Only spotted these for the first time this morning.
And what's the deal with the exits?
I still remain incredibly positive about the new developments and confess that I was badly wrong with my previous suspicions. The 'feel' of the Lido has been retained, with a few extra comforts in place. The opening up of the entrance is wonderful.
*love the anorak architectural nature this thread is taking*

Have you actually read through this thread before making your patronising comment? Clearly not... I've already flagged up concerns about the price of season tickets, the floors being slippy etc etc etc.. a long list of concerns in fact. I then, told the manager at the Lido my concerns - as did many others. The next day blue matting appeared in the changing rooms and on the walkway out to the pool. There's plenty of discussion on here about stuff other than meeting up. Discussing it here won't get it fixed though - you need to make a bit more of an effort I'm afraid.
If you want to get involved over and above making sarcastic comments on this thread about what I discuss, BLU could do with help on their stall during the Lambeth country show. Or you could perhaps fill in one of the feedback forms that Fusion have left in the Lido - you can ask for them to respond and enter into a dialogue with them. Personally I find the showers ok - small and insufficient (as I have already mentioned on this thread) but not slippy. If you find them slippy I suggest you do what I, and others, have done and take your complaint to those who can potentially fix the problem.
In the meanwhile I'm still using the lido and enjoying meeting up with others who do so.

Looking forward to seeing you at the BLU MARQUEE I have my name down for a stint.
I have also taken up with Fusion & Blu and the Council the risk to young children escaping the Lido through the concealed turnstile exits. I am aware of two such incidents involving a 3 year old and 6 year old child. As a result of my approaches Andrew Ormston instigated a health and safety review and its down to the parents. Excellent news all round. :) I did notice a sign up by the turnstile the other day - just a paper one at the moment saying something along the lines of "children must be accounted for at all times" - or something like that. Spotted James Nesbitt having a lot of lido love as well.
Hurrrah - made it down there for the first time yesterday evening! Sunny and just cold enough to be bracing but warm enough to be comfortable - perfect!
I like the extra space round the pool.
Cor blimey those changing rooms are SMALL though, what were they thinking?! I know they're squeezing in a gym and things, which is all good, but the space around the entrance and toilets just doesn't seem to have been used efficiently - I reckon they could have doubled the size of the changing area quite easily without taking away space from the other facilities.

Good news:
New Early Morning Swimmers’ Season Ticket
If you are an early morning swimmer and you swim more than three times a week you will benefit from the new “early morning swimmers” season ticket. If you buy one this week it will cost you £56 to swim from 6.45 to 10am Monday to Friday from now until September 16th. In addition it will entitle you to swim at other times for £2.69 rather than £5.20.
All season tickets are reduced weekly to reflect the number of weeks remaining in the season so it is never too late to buy one a save money.
and also this:
Saturday, 4th August and 5th Sunday August - Celebrate the Lido’s 70th birthday with Waterwords by the Pool 2 to 5 --- writing by the water about water—no experience needed.
Saturday 4th August ---famous comedian and poet Paul Lyalls will be by the pool and Sunday 5th August acclaimed local poet Francesca Beard will be by the pool. Both poets will be helping bathers to write their feelings, thoughts and ideas about the Lido and other watery experiences. Bathers are advised to be there promptly at 2pm on Saturday to catch Paul Lyall’s sparkling performance before getting down to wordsmithing themselves.
This event is free with swim ticket. It is sponsored by BBC RaW and Brockwell Lido Users.

We want hot showers! I migrated from Crystal Palace pool because I got fed up of the ongoing shower sagas there and really...!
Also, now the weather is warming up and the pool is getting busier, the teeniness of the changing rooms is becoming more of a problem. Perhaps they think people will change around the pool under their towels or something?
gaijingirl
01-08-2007, 20:02
And the toilets are minging and there's still not been a proper, full-on crowded day.
Thing is, I don't think that either the changing rooms or the toilets will change now. :(
I do think they think people will change outside and wait till they get home to change/shower.
Still, at least the flying ants don't seem to mind... :D

But, for me, all of those things are made up for by the outsideyness of the pool - it is a bit rubbish not having hot showers yet or the size of the changing rooms, but when I'm sat by the pool, in the sun, with a book and can jump in and out and see the sun/rain reflected on the pool floor, or when I'm swimming along and look up over my shoulder to take a breath and see the sky - I don't care about the showers/changing rooms/toilets etc... :)

Farewell summer and farewell the Lido... :( It's the last weekend of lido loveliness for the year. We watched the most incredible sunset last night and swam at dusk as the lights in the dance studios came on and lit up the pool. It was just amazing. There was some kind of chanting/5 rhythms type thing going on with some rather nice music and an amazing deep purple and orange sky. It was really sad though... people were saying goodbye to each other and "see you next summer"... the Lido has such a massive impact on my life. I wish it were open year round - even cold - like Tooting - or even better, a little warmed - like London Fields.
Here's to next summer.

I did do Tooting at 7:30am on a Feb morning once (without wetsuit) - my watch stopped the exact second I jumped in...
This will have to be better...

I'd love to do a midwinter swim - I'd heard a rumour there was going to be one in mid-Jan (though maybe that was Tooting  ).
I won't be here on the 22nd though - genuinely :( to miss this.
I hope they have lovely hot showers working afterwards :D

Tooting is open throughout the year but you have to become a member to swim out of season.
There was originally a rumour of a Christmas Day swim at Brockwell but it seems to have worked out as the 22nd - which is close enough.
I shall be heading straight for the steam room/sauna/jacuzzi if they'll let me through whilst wet!!

I was going past the Lido the other day wishing I could go for a swim. However....

The January swim was described as a one-off though - called something like the "Winter Record-Breaking Swim" or the "Lido World Championship" or something (tongue in cheek I presume) & everyone would swim one width of the lido - I think it was Tooting come to think of it :) though don't know if its actually going to happen.

They're hosting the World Winter Swimming Championships in Feb - maybe that's what you're thinking of...

anyone want to win £600? :D
"Water Performance Competition
The water performance competition consists of teams of between 3 and 20 people who put on a performance lasting between 2 and 5 minutes. At least 3 members of the team must enter the water during the performance. You can have crazy costumes, hilarious hats, a storyline and music (see rules for swimmers for further details). A prize of £600 will be awarded to the winning team"

I did it - with no wetsuit and the worst hangover of 2007 and an ever-worsening cold.
I felt momentarily invigorated and full of life. :D
But now I feel like crap again.. :(

Well that was 'challenging.' I wimped out wearing a wetsuit. Still shivering. It was a wonderful morning though and hopefully the first of an annual outing for the Brockwell Icicles. Well done BLU and Fusion for making this happen.
I've posted some pictures up over HERE (http://www.onionbagblog.com/pictemps/winterlido.html).
