After last years bombings & news stories- or if you know anyone who has travelled there let me know your thoughts/opinions. Thinking of going to Marmaris this year with my husband, do you think it is too risky?
Ive just got back from Kusadasi & feel safer in Turkey than i do here in the UK.
The FCO havnt given out any travel warnings not to travel there.

Yes it is safe to travel in Turkey at the moment. Have been living here for two and a half years now. Its much safer here than in the UK, if you leave aside the stupid numbers of fatalities on the roads.
Having said that, I'm off to Diyarbakir with my wife at the weekend. Proper bandit country! On the plus side, look at the place!

Wow! Looks amazing :-)- we are thinking of going to Marmaris/Bodrum around the 1st August- they seemed to have slashed the prices substantially this year- hence my question.

Near to Fethiye / Hisaronu / Oludeniz.. am expecting it to be lethal, but Mrs Filter is a sun worshipper with very dark olive skin, so she'll be fine. I might die.

Im going there too!! We are staying at the Montana Pine Resort in Hisarono..or thereabouts :)
I think we're going there later this year too -- you have to be pretty unlucky to be in a bomb -- probably more statisically tho than choking on a grape or summit :D

I just got back from Bodrum a week ago. It's perfectly safe. Well, of course you never know, but it's just as safe as anywhere else.

Pfff. Every body is going to the wrong end of Turkey. Come out here to the wild wild east, much more exciting. Weve got actual devil worshippers and all sorts out here!

I've seen the Montana Pine Resort, (online), and it looks really good.
On Thurs we're off to Calis Beach, (not far from Fethiye). We're staying at the Oykun which gets rave reviews.
Been to Turkey once before, to Ovacik, near Hisaronu. Stayed at the Montaverde which was generally good, though room a bit dull.
Meh... as if you should worry about going anywhere... :D
(See my post in: Are you scared of being bombed :D)

Unless you want a very 'british' ( blackpool type) holiday dont stay in Marmaris, Stay in Icmeler which is just down the cost, 10 mins by dolmus ( 1.5 lira per person each way fare)
The beach is much better, the place is quieter and you get less hassle from restauranteurs and trip providers who constantly pester you in Marmaris

Well, it's a proper English package holiday place, which I loved, but there is alson culture to be found.
The dolmas (bus/taxi) things are 2 lira per person to both Oludeniz (the beach, where we spent most days) or Fethiye (the city, big market on Tuesdays that's worth a visit.. we were told it's the hottest place in Turkey and can believe it, as in the late 50s centigrade.
Paragliding from the top of a mountain down to the Oludeniz beach is amazing, £50 per person.
Oludeniz national park (Blue Lagoon) is 2.75 lira to get in. Very beautiful, bit too busy when we went, should be fine in October. Crystal clear turquoise water, lots of fish, just stunning.
We ate at a restaurant called Jitters 23 a few times, on the Fethiye road.. cheap and cheerful, but really nice owners and good Turkish food.
Watch out for a bloke on the beach trying to sell you a meal at his restaurant, Kings Garden, in Fethiye. Definitely go, really nice guy, amazing views, free entry to the Lycian tombs, great food, and dancing. He picks you up from the hotel and drops you off n' all.
Loads of cool excursions but we didn't do any.. boat trips are dirt cheap (£5 for the day, including lunch) and look good. There's some place where a mountain split in an earthquake that supposed to be amazing as well.

YES!! I was expecting a ice cheap holiday and i got a nasty shock, those bastard Turkish men will try and rip you off every chance they get, a very common scam is to quote you a price in euros and only reveal at bill-paying time what the actual price in lira is
dont be afraid to query any bills as they often give in and give you money off if you make a fuss
turkeys safe, it's the return journey that will lead to your death

Just get away from the tourist restaurants/shops and you won't have a problem: Turks are very honest, very honorable. It is expensive though--just imagine what it's like for the locals, who earn a tenth of Western wages.

:( Oh no, I thought Turkey was pretty cheap. We don't go on holiday much cos we don't have a lot of money spare but from what my mum and other people have said I thought that it was a reasonably priced place to visit.
I'm a bit worried now.

Levrek and cipura innit. And don't worry, it's cheaper than London and most of Western Europe--it's just not third world-style cheap.

I didn't find it at all expensive
We went for the poshest meal we could in Hisaronu, 3 courses, 2 bottles of wine, total cost was 97YTL.. about £40!
Take English money, they accept it in most shops. Loads of £10 for 5 t-shirts, £20 for 3 pairs of jeans.

Most levrek and çupra is farmed these days. What you really want is either lagos or dil balik.
The tricks that you get in tourist restaurants are an artifact of the fact that your wage (pretty much whatever it is) is massivly higher than the normal local wage. For example, the guys who I work with (mostly unskilled labourers) are on about 400YTL a month, thats about £150. A damn good meal for two at the best restaurant in town comes in at about 150YTL which is cheap for what you get, but it is still way out of the reach of the ordinary population. If you go to lokanta's or cigerci etc which cater for the locals, you will find that a decent meal is about 5-10YTL. Remember to haggle, and if in doubt, agree the price before you eat etc.
On a different note, my wife is turkish.

Bodrum, Marmaris and Fethiye are getting expensive and crowded as years go by, Cesme is the new popular place and has an adventage to be close to Izmir, a 3 million and a developed city and close to Christianity's important places, may be you may search about beaches around Izmir

Just got back- was fantastic time, i'll post up some pics in a bit. Didn't do much except lie by the pool, was very very hot
We took out 450 quid for a week and spent the lot- but then we had air conditioning, safety deposit box- and bought a few pressies back. We were spending about 40-50 quid a day. Stayed at the Keskin Hotel in Marmaris, which was basic, but very clean and lovely pool :)
