View Full Version : Cairns in August
I'm off to Cairns in August for two weeks. Has anyone else been and any suggestions of places I should visit?
Also, how warm is it in August/September? Warm enough for shorts, t-shirts & bikini's?

Should always be warm up in Cairns so no worries with that.
I have been there very briefly (24 hours), it's a bit of a party town but not really that much to it as far as I could tell? However, given my short time there it could be much better than that. Also, you have the option of diving etc off the coast.

Prob will do the diving - cant' really go to Cairns and not go diving.
Also going to be staying in Sydney for two nights on teh way back.
Any suggestions of places to go and see while I'm there - bearing in mind I'm only going to be there a couple of days.

Drinking with a mate last night who had just come back from Townsville - said it 25 degrees every day without a breath of wind so you should be sweet in Cairns.
Me and the wife normally head to FNQ around August aswell - can get bloody windy but it's always sunny.
Leave Cairns immediately and stay in Port Douglas, 20 mins North.
If you want to go diving, DO NOT go on a Quicksilver boat, find a local dude. I got to pilot a boat for 20 miles to the reef. Quicksilver boats are shit and fuck the reef up...
As you drive into Port Douglas, you go past a big (but low lying) Hotel thingie, keep going up the road, road bears left, keep going, when you hit the next junction, pretty much straight ahead is a bar on a boat. Go park up and chat to the guy on there, he'll give you the best advice for your stay.
There's a really good Hostel on the way into Port Douglas, just past the shit touristy one. Just back from the beach. I'll dig the details out tomorrow.
To the poster above.. my Dad lives in Townsville, as much as he wants to see me, he says Townsville is shite :p

Yes, Port Douglas is very nice. About an hour and a half north of cairns.
But even better is mission beach the same distance south of cairns. I think mission is the port douglas of maybe 20 years ago.
There is so much magic in either direction you should spend as little time as possible in cairns itself.
FNQ is bloody stunning i reckon!
Thanks for the advice - will definitely be taking a trip to both of the mentioned places. Don't really want to change where we're staying as we're out there for a wedding and there's about 14 or more of us all staying at the same resort.

Oh its pretty tropical there. Spent a couple of weeks on my travels there and my now partner lived there for 5 months.
Its very humid and if it rains it doesn't stop for like weeks. When its good its still humid and pretty hot. Maybe take some wet day clothes as a precaution.
White water rafting is cool if you like that sort of thing and snorkling around the reefs. Don't go in the water anywhere thats not allowed, eg. the sea unsupervised as there's crocs there.
Its pretty much a party town with tons of backpackers and tourists. The 'woolshed' club is a must and is renowned throughout Australia as a dingy but big party place. Its where Stan Collymore got locked up and stars have been known to frequent it. The man made beach area has some bars around and is pretty trendy day and night.
If you have any specific questions drop me a PM and we'll be glad to help (i'll ask the other half, he he)

My missus worked there and said its full of army lads and a bit rowdy at night as there's not much to do.
I'm off in two weeks time. Noted all suggestions and will give you an update when I come back :)
Mission beach gets a vote from my bro, who drove the whole east coast of oz last year.

well, I'm in Sydney for a couple of nights so perhaps you can suggest something there?
For a couple of nights?
Just do the usual: Darwin Harbour, Opera House, Harbour Bridge etc...
Just got back - had a fantastic time.
Went to the outer barrier reef, Port Douglas, Palm Cove, Mission beach etc
Also went to the Woolshed and had a great drunken night dancing on tables and goldfish racing (!)
Stayed in Cronulla for two days which was beautiful but couldn't see any of Sydney City as the APEC thing and the whole city was on lock down cause of that prat Bush
Going back in Feb for 3 weeks staying in Cronulla and Gosford and then to Brisbane/Gold coast for a week.
Cool, I'm now booked to go in December :)
Shame about Sydney.
