View Full Version : Moscow airport questions......
I usually do Russia by train, but I may have to use airyplane soon- in and out of Shevcenko airport to UK ( or whatever its called )
I have heard that all hold luggage is xrayed and checked over by customs - can anyone confirm this is the current situation ?
cheers

Yes, its still called the UK last time I checked (if you mean that bit next to France)
Sheremetyevo (Шереметьево) - fucking nightmare.
Don't know about hold baggage. I would assume so. Haven't noticed anything missing.
Worst bit is departing. Terminal 2 is divided into two halves. If you're lucky, two hours before your flight you discover which half it leaves from. Then you can join the queue for Customs clearance to leave Russia (all it is in fact is passing through a channel to say you don't have more than US$3000 on you - but when I was there there were huge lines of confused Chinese people with mounds of baggage taller than me). Queue-jump. Really.
Allow around 90 mins to clear immigration on the way in, too.
Taxis are also not good for people who can't swear fluently in Russian. One hapless colleague got ripped off for US$170 to get into town and it took two hours in a traffic jam. Do not ever accept a ride "on the meter".
I did it for Rub100 (£2) There's a bus to Lobnya (Лобня) - Rub15 - from where there are "express" (i.e. non-stopping) trains (Rub70) to Savyolovsky (Савеловский (http://www.legendtour.ru/eng/russia/moscow/foto.shtml?02321)) station, one stop outside the Circle Line of the Metro. Last bus 21:17 for the 22:00 train (http://www.sheremetyevo-express.ru/schedule/avtoline.html). Took three hours, including getting the wrong Metro.

What will really cook your noodle is the appearance of what looks like loads of cake tins stuck to the ceiling when you get in to the arrivals terminal of the airport.

I've spent hours staring at those, although I came to believe they were empty catering-size tin cans.

Fuming? Over what?
Was it AeroFlot's stunning anti-capitalist way of running an airline perhaps?
I had a connecting flight, London to Leningrad to Moscow, four and a half hour wait in an empty departure lounge with much ceiling staring and a stunning example of Russian cuisine upstairs in the canteen, then Moscow to Karachi to Columbo.
Every Russian seemed to frown at me, ill-fitting nylon uniform responsible I imagine. Slight variant on the DDR were folk just looked hungry and sad.

Chips and beer is cheap.

Um.
Thats a pisser. I want to bring "stuff" back to the UK - nothing dodgy or religious icony mind , but may provoke some discussion amongst the customs people should they see it and I am sure they would want to "tax" the shite in my hold luggage if this happens.
I know the various train routes out check your compartment over.
not sure what to do next
