Anyone know roughly how much on average the tax is on a plane ticket?
% wise that is....

Doesn't work like that*
Departing the UK it's a fixed amount of government tax (depending on destination and class of travel), plus fuel & secuirty charges (YQ tax) and airport taxes both for the departure airport and arrival airport.
Some places that you depart from charge a fixes % of the ticket as tax, but very few.
Where you going from and to and I'll tell you the tax.

My employer will give me "the cost of a flight, minus tax", (Mexico - London) and they`re telling me its 35%...I reckon they're stiffing me, but wanted to check.

I think you're employer is confused about the tax situation, as the tax isn't VAT so businesses can't claim it back.
Mexico City to Heathrow, one-way with BA the tax is £86.70. That is made up of £34.10 Mexican government tax, £12.10 Mexico City airport fee and £40.50 fuel surcharge/secuity charge.
Everyone must pay the tax, even those travelling on free tickets, it can not be claimed back.

P.S. The one-way fare with BA Mexico City to London is £909 plus tax = £995.70.
So they are stuffing you if they want to knock of 35%.

Cool.
I`m on the case!
Hang on, how would that work then? Your company won't be paying the tax (as they want you to pay it) and then they also want to claim it back???

Nah.
I`m entitled to an annual flight.
But I don`t wanna use it, so can according to my contract "cash it in", but they were sayin' I could only get 65% of its value...
...I think its gonna be okay now though.;)

It's a fair whack. I recently bought a 12 month ticket that will see me go from Lon - Bangkok - Sydney - Auckland. The fare was something like £585 but then another £250 odd was added on in taxes!!
My employer will give me "the cost of a flight, minus tax"
Are you sure they don't mean income tax?
Unless the flight is wholly and necessarily in the fulfilment of your duties, someone's going to have to pay income tax on that benefit.
E2A: and National Insurance.

Nah.
Overseas employer.
Overseas resident.
Overseas contract.
This is Mexico. Someone wants to skim their share of money off the top.
