I´m planning to get by bus from Mexico to Canada and the US has, inconsiderately, placed itself squarely in the way. I reckon a good place to stop off between Houston or San Antonio and Detroit would be in Tennessee, any ideas as to which city?

I was in Memphis for a couple of days last year , I didnt do the Gracelands bit because I thought it would be tacky but I did wander around Sun studios , such a famous site which appears not to have changed at street level at all. The experience for me though was Beale Street which is a 100 metres of live music bars including BB Kings Blues Club, the standard of music wherever I went was stunning , grammy winning musicians , superb blues , 6ft away from your nose , just walk in off the street.
The Stax museum is also in Memphis but sadly I did not have enough time,
The other must do whilst in Memphis is BBQ Ribs , it seems everyone has their favourite place and insists that it serves the best in the state , forget any ribs you have tasted before , they really are special.
I would love to go to Nashville and Muscle Shoals but that will have to wait for another day.

Why not both? You'd take I 40 between them both, then go I 75 from Knoxville to Detroit.

Memphis is pretty grungy apart from Beale St., Nashville is much better.
First off stop in San Antonio not Houston for the Texas leg. No brainer that one.
Been to both Memphis and particularly Nashville a few times and maybe it's cos I know loads of people in the latter makes me say Nashville.
If you have time to hang there's some very nice people to meet and the one place YOU must go is Grimey's Music/The Basement. It's a great secondhand record shop and a fine fine venue. Tell them you been to the Windmill (honest) and try and speak to Mike the owner and he'll set you right.
On the face of it it's a very religious place but has a nice underground. Downtown is quite upmarket these days but go to Robert's Western World (half cowboy boot store/ half bar-venue) where decent hoedown bands play for tips. Avoid shit like the Hard Rock obviously.
Sorry, woprk prevents me rambling on but will keep an eye on the thread and maybe add more later.
Happy travels!
