Madrid is well worth a visit. Fantastic city IMO. Great nightlife. Great galleries. I think the police have clamped down on the street parties since I last spent anytime there, but there are still some great alternative clubs (so I'm told).
A very different city to Barcelona, but equally worth visiting.

do not go to madrid IN THE SUMMER
I spent a couple of weeks there in August 2000. Dead by day, granted, but still a riot by night. Constantly above 36 degrees by day. I do have one memory of sweating my bollocks off at a crowded party in a very small flat without AC.
A huge chunk of Granada closes for July and August. Think it happens all over Spain. Tourists are still catered for mind and there is still a very vibrant nightlife.

I only went to barcelona as a teenager with mum and dad, so I can't really say. but what I really want to say is: rather than spending St George Day here, where either nobody cares or you get NF types parading the streets of Bermondsey or proud Engalenders drinking vast amount of crap beer wishing the foreigners out of their country, I would rather very much be in Barcelona for St Jordi where I gather the highlight of the day is where they give each others roses and books and the book fairs are doing brisk business.
I'll do it one day.

If you go to Madrid, check out El Perro club and cafe - it's run by two mates of mine who are absolutely wicked and will provide you with an excellent night out.

Well, I am going in summer, deal with it!
I'll check out that club, what sort of music do they host?
Any rock type scene in Barcelona or Madrid?

All kinds of everything I think - live bands, electronic music...whatever makes a party. I should say that I haven't made it over to the club yet, but I have never failed to have an amazingly good time in Jamie and Ines' company, so any club they run has got to be in with a chance of being ace!

cadaques was his summer residence, and it's very expensive, but nice.
