My favourite part of Hamburg are the Schanzenviertel and the Karoviertel just north of St Pauli (tube station: Sternschanze). There's loads of nice bars, strange shops and cheap restaurants and generally a nice atmosphere. I cant remember particular names, but the main street is called Schulterblatt.
And a walk through the 'Speicherstadt' at the old docks is very nice as well.

There is an old anarchist squat in a massive 5-storey 'terrace' not far from the river in St Pauli. It has some very interesting artworks, together with slogans like macht kaputt was euch kaputt macht!, kein mensch ist illegal and (in English) 1984 is now... the end is just the beginning ...

The Rote Flora squat in the Sternschanze, the Alster lake, Mutter (bar), boat trip around the canals. You should have arranged to stay on Saturday night. There's a club called Barkasse Hedi on a boat which goes round and round the harbour, stopping every hour to let people on and off. It's good fun,but it's only on Fridays and Saturdays. St.Pauli's last game of the season is this weekend but it's away unfortunately, however there should be some stuff going on in the fans pub The Jolly Roger.
