Anyone been? I'm going next Saturday and it looks gorgeous, the food sounds great and apparently its where the Spanish go for their holidays. All good so far but Urban reccomendations would be even better.:)

I went when i was a kid. Can't remember much but we had tapas. We also looked at some old stuff. Er that's pretty much I can recall. Have fun!

Was there last october. Didn't take much notice of where I went as nearly everywhere to eat is great. The old town Parte Vieja is the more touristy bit but still great tapas. I found the best way to get good tapas was to look for places with an older clientele. The food in these were excellent. If I remember rightly a place on Calle De san Martin near Calle de Manterola in the centro district had amazing food. Have a great time its a very chilled place.

Donostia Saint Sebastian?

Oh whelk.

Impressive, but they drive motorcycles onto the beach from the seafront. And the locals are all surrealist drug takers.

If that's your bag.

And 'chill before serving' has an 'X' in it, as does every other bloody word. Good luck.

Spent about 4 hours last Autumn - between train and plane - some nice and modest eateries on the beach area - sort of place where they charge you what you drink out of the bottle ! As ever modest prices for great food.

Reccomended - as is the trian ride to Bilbao via the FEVE line ....folks were friendy enough.

Thanks all :) . I'm started to get excited now although I keep looking at the web cam and all I see is rain and wind ...might as well be here in cold, wet and windy Essex.:(

I was born in Billericay- (at least that's what is says on my passport;) )

I believe St.Sebastian is as cold at the mo. too.

I'm a couple of hours down the autoroute to St. Sebastian. It's cold wet and mis. I believe it's due to improve on Thursday. I want to get to Palermo, but Air France says there is no such place, and Easy Jet reckon it's a million quid one way, and there aren't any flights anyway.

Sans Sebastian/ Donostia is lovely...you'll enjoy wandering around the old town, eating pintxos (tapas) and has some good shopping there as well...
Nice sea walks, lovely long sandy beaches etc...etc.... Downside it is very expensive and the city is known for it's posh-ness and wealth....go out of the old town if you can...Egia, is one of the local neighbourhoods that I go to when I'm there....great food, bars and late night dancing...Enjoy!

OOoh sounds good. I can't wait to try the pintxos and have been reading up about them. I've told the person I'm going with we have to try cod in chocolate and be adventurous with our food. She is terrible and is likely to stick to things she can regonise. I've told her we have Imodium we can eat.

It's often a bit Blackpool :D

I know people who are possibly moving close to San Sebastian. Lots of rain and snow in winter and spring, but the summer is a lot better than a summer in Wales TBH. I think summer is already happening there. I'm sure Sparkling will have lots of sunshine and fantastic seafood. Gastronomy is big in that part of Spain. They take their food and eating very seriously.

My dream place to move to one day:
- surfing
- cycling (close to the pyranees, big basque cycling culture)
- tapas and bars
- great restaurants (Arzak if you fancy a splurge)
- nice beaches
- chilled out

have a great time!

Excellent and thanks:)

My aim is to try as many of the tapas and bars as possible especially if the weather is still poor. I don't care if I sit in a bar, with a book and just people watch and generally chill. :)

It was brilliant:) :)

Our hotel was on the La Concha beach with fantastic views across the bay.

We spent the whole week basically just wondering from one end of the bay to the other via numerous bars eating Pintxos and drinking wine. The weather got better once the sun came out and I've come home with a tan.

Felt totally relaxed there as there is the beach complete with fantastic views, lovely gardens and fountains, old town with pintxos bars, new town with shops, surfing beach with cats, funicular railways with amazing views at the top (only marred by the horrible funfair)and wondering up to the old fort listening to the sounds of birds on one side and the sea on the other is a really good way to forget all your troubles.

No one speaks English which was very good for us and meant we just had to get out the phrase book and just try which was also good fun.

All in all I'd give the place 9/10 and would give it 10/10 except it is a bit expensive.

Glad you had a great time.

I went with my family as a kid. The only things I remember are the sandy beaches and getting an Incredible Hulk t-shirt from a hypermarket.
