View Full Version : How would you get to the Balkans?

I'm heading to Eastern Europe this summer, starting in the Balkans, and originally I had sworn not to take any flights for the sake of our poor beleaguered planet. As the time approaches though I'm weakening. I can't afford to do the whole thing by train, though perhaps I could do it from the other side of the channel - but how would I get across cheaply? And buses take forever and I hate them. I've considered hitching but I've never done it before and it seems like a lot of effort and could take ages.
So would you take the plane?

The flight is £20 btw. Bloody economic incentives being all wrong! :(

 Out of interest, are multi-choice psychology questionaires designed to take account of the 'can't be arsed to read all the options' type of person? I merely ask cos I'd hate to think of people such as yourself getting skewed results due to people such as yourself :p

well, i guess there's always an instinct to go with the first option, or at least the second, simply to get through the questionnaire more quickly. the thing to do is to randomise the responses - put them in a weird order that doesn't make sense. to make people think about the answer properly.
i would've voted for the last had i seen it - but just cos i have a reputation to keep up. :)

I *was* a little surprised to see you hadn't ticked the last option :D

Given that a lot more of the fuel of a plane journey is used in take-off and landing, I doubt that that trip was more environmentally friendly than flying straight there. More interesting perhaps.
You could fly or get the Eurostar across the channel and then get one o those all zones interrail cards (they've changed the structure recently) planning to do this myself at some point in the next year.

Agreed - the distance between Italy - balkans is only 15 minutes flying time anyway , but it a v interesting trip!
Train is between 25-35 hours from London the Belgrade also

Hitch it. I would.
I may do actually. Even here from Spain and I'm a big scary looking fucker whilst you look like a total pansy :p
Hitch, hitch, hitch. Hike, hike, hike. Hurts much and pays BIG rewards. Go for it
