Is there actaully any kind of border between the Republic and Northern Ireland?

For example, if a Russian passport holder is legally in the UK, but would need a visa to visit the Republic of Ireland, could he just pop over to Belfast and jump on the train to Dublin and never have to show his passport?

The answer to your question is no. Irish immigration police come on the train, or on the bus, after the border is crossed, and check.

Not every time, but often enough for it to be a risk.

I'd suggest you land your Russian friend using a midget submarine.

(also, check with the Irish embassy as to whether a tourist visa would be needed, and if so how it might be acquired).

If you drive across the border and even if you are stopped, you are unlikely to be asked to produce passports if you're all white, sound irish or english and are driving with appropriate plates.

He could always hike across !!

'Cos no-one would find a solitary Russian hiking across the border at all suspect. :D

Why ??

They don't have a hammer & sickle tattoed into the top of their head, from the air they are just another bog trotter off to check their cattle :p

Like the schengen counties in europe, the NI/Eire border is unmarked and open.

i think you would have no bother. there are very few passport/border controls any more. problem could arise if you had a problem while in the republic and encountered he law. i.e traffic accident, illness, etc...

go for it.
