me and the husband are off to brighton at the end of the month for a mid-week break (cheaper innit :D )

the daytimes are pretty much sorted for shopping, sitting on the beach, eating chips on the pier, but I'd like some recommendations for places to eat and drink in the evenings.

we're staying at the hotel pelirocco, which apparently has a good bar, but we want to venture out of the hotel at some point. the hotel is in regency square, so I'm thinking places along the seafront might be a good bet.

don't really fancy old man type boozers (we'll go to them during the day :D ), but also don't fancy anything poncey either. quirky would be good, sleazy would be good. cheesy wouldn't.

el mexicano restaurant looks like it might be good, anyone been?

also, does anyone know where to look for small gigs that might be happening? the only gig I can find online is simon webbe, and that's no good now is it?

If you're around on Sunday, everyone around these parts raves on about the Jamaica Inn. OK, so they're slightly biased - there's an exodus from here to there every w/e - but there's apparently a massive, perfect roast on offer for a fiver.

And a quality reggae selection from some old faces and a relaxed atmosphere by all accounts. Could be worth a visit.

Its on western road, past the waitrose, technically its in hove (as that road to the west of waitrose is the brighton/hove border.

I'd go to the evening star (just by the station) as its one of the few independant pubs left in brighton. They brew their own beer, and their corriander beer is ace. The other pub I'd recomend is the Heart in Hand in the north lanes, its traditonally the band scene pub, has an ace fat dog, and wicked jukebox.

The Lion and Lobster on the Hove/Brighton border is nice and I seem to recall the toilets are pretty cool. Me and Flashy scored a free serving of fish and chips there one snowy January day cos we were hiding round in the restauranty bit and they forgot about us. I don't know if they still do the "Homemade cider. 2 pints maximum - no arguments" on the bar though :D

The Hobgoblin on the London Road, near Sainsbury's and Grubbs (where everybody should have at least one burger in their life) also puts on bands some nights. I saw Peter and the Test Tube Babies there for free a couple of years ago, and a whole day long thing of up and coming punk bands.

I always preferred the Uncle Sams veggie sandwich - but I was a veggie back then. Knew a few folks who worked in Grubbs (when it was at the old location) and the hygene standards were a bit dodgy.

I used to work at the 7-11 that was on York Place - before that whole run of shops died. Used to be a lively little row.

anyway, the second time i went was on a hen do a few weeks back and it was horrid - loads of bars, booze and general mayhem.

my point is, chose your venue wisely - i have been to brighton loads and it can be quite hit and miss cos so many people pitch up there... anyways, i'm sure you and teh milesy will have fun cos yr doing yr research innit!

didn't she spend most of her time there in casualty?

i just to spend about 8-10 weekends every summer down there but it was a few years ago. There's a lovely pub just on Seven Dials, can't remember the name of that. And a great pub just round the corner from the end of the Laines. Can't remember the name of that either.

Try not to end up at the Catfish Club on Friday night. You probably will anyway, but try not to.

I always found Brighton better for random house parties than clubs anyway - the clubs were always oversubscribed, overpriced and finished too early

Full Moon? Shakespeares Head?

And a great pub just round the corner from the end of the Laines. Can't remember the name of that either. You are getting your Lanes and your North Laine mixed up I think.

I can't believe the Catfish Club is still going. Used to go to that way back when. They played blues and stuff way back when.

i thought they were all Laines, hence the spelling confusion people have..

Idaho
11-05-2007, 11:21
No the confusion seems to be that The Lanes are plural whereas North Laines is not a plural. As in the area is North Laines rather than being the North Laines.

Not that it actually matters, but while I'm being pedantic I may as well go the whole hog.

Has anyone mentioned the Great Eastern?

Little pub with dusty books all along the walls at the bottom of Trafalgar Street (same road as the Prince Albert but at the bottom of the hill) - really nice for a quieter drink. Almost opposite that is a pub called the George which does totally veggie (and rather nice) food. Those are usually my two haunts when I go down there.

In re: to cafes, the North Lanes underwent a bit of an explosion of organic cafes a few years back. However, if you find that sort of thing a bit pretentious there's a great (and busy) little cafe called Kensingtons on a little street called Kensington Gardens. I think from Trafalgar street you walk almost to the bottom of the hill and right along Sydney Street, and then when you get to the end of that it's the road continuing opposite, a wee bit to the right. If there's room you can sit on the roof terrace and watch all the people wander around below. Note, there are two places with roof terraces on this street, and you want the one at the far end of the road (if you're following those directions) rather than the one nearest you.

Kensingtons is next to a shop called Pussy which is overpriced but usually worth a peek if you like kitsch stuff at all. And there are a fair few kitsch shops in the North Lanes.

Yup, that's the one. I think it's called Kensingtons but I'm a little uncertain.

I used to work there for a couple of months after finishing uni. If the owners are the same since then, then it's fantastic food, but if you complain about a small thing or in a cheeky way then the owners are a bit on the scary side! :D

Btw, open house, I definitely get the meejah thing more than the student thing. Mind you, thinking about it the main times I've been there has been round Xmas time when all the students are at home, or in the summer when most of them are at home. Silly me for just thinking of that now

Well, when you are veggie (or pescetarian), you're more just overwhelmed by the fact there's an entire fairly reasonably priced menu from which you can chose from with various things you'd actually consider eating, than to notice how it is a leedle poncy. ;)

Look, I am a really unobservant person which leads to various misspellings, OK? :o

Tbh, the one thing I don't like about Brighton is I can't think of any clubs/after hours bars which I actually like. They all seem to range from the poncy to the cheesy to the hard clubby, with a few quieter "meh" places in between. And the Concorde Two makes me feel claustrophobic for some reason.

However, as a few years ago this led to me not even trying, I might not be totally up to date on this.

Heh!

Don't be, we're all so laid back that we're nearly horizontal.

The Hobgoblin on the London Road, near Sainsbury's and Grubbs (where everybody should have at least one burger in their life) also puts on bands some nights. I saw Peter and the Test Tube Babies there for free a couple of years ago, and a whole day long thing of up and coming punk bands.

Heh... Spent two and a half years working there part time when it was called The Northern... band scene was good.... Memories....

Saw Captain Sensible there a couple of months ago

As mentioned, music at The Albert (Trafalgar Street) just adj to the station
Bankers on Western Road for fish & chips or Bardsleys in Baker Street just along from what was the London Road Co-Op

Good pub along there as well, though the name escapes me at the moment

I always preferred the Uncle Sams veggie sandwich - but I was a veggie back then. Knew a few folks who worked in Grubbs (when it was at the old location) and the hygene standards were a bit dodgy.

I used to work at the 7-11 that was on York Place - before that whole run of shops died. Used to be a lively little row.
I worked at The Northern :)

I never drank in the Northern when it was the Northern. I think it changed to the Hobgoblin in about.. hmmm.. 1990?

York Place had about 5 takeaways, the 7-11, a couple of sit in restaraunts, the off licence - as well as a half dozen shops that were open in the day. There was quite an atmosphere there of an evening. It's almost completely derelict now.

well after all that i think the only place we went to that any of you lot suggested was the heart in hand for a quick pint :o the cocktails in the hotel bar were too nice for us to bother with elsewhere for drinking really :D (but cheers to all of you anyway!)

but yeah, we had a great time. lovely hotel, lovely friendly staff and a room that was just lovely to spend a lot of time lovely in ;) but we did do a fair bit of exploring of the laines and other shops, and of the sea front too. an ace few days :)
