Anyone know how frequent the buses/coaches are:
a) from Athens to Nafplio
b) from Nafplio to Mycenae
(The guidebooks all seem to reckon that the train journey is ridiculously slow -any disagreement?)
Any recommendations for eating/drinking in Nafplio also gratefully received.
I don't know about buses from Athens to Nafplio but I have travelled between Athens and the Peloponesse half a dozen time in the last few years and going by coach is the sensible option. It should only take a couple of hours at most as you are going just South of Corinth. I know that Athens-Gythion is 3 1/2 hours and that is a much longer trip.
I can't say how regular the service is but I have never spent more than an hour or two in Athens bus station which isn't such a bad place. If you have a while there enjoy the shelter from the sun and grab a cheese pie and a coffee.
I dont know about coaches but I'd receomend getting to Mycenae as early as possible before it gets over run by coach parties.
Nafplio is a lovely town, will be back in Greece this summer so may try and spend a day there.
Bring a torch (battery powered is fine - no need to get to primitive) to mycenae and go down the secret passage to the water source.
When I was there there was nothing to suggest that you weren't allowed to go down this passage but nor was there any sort of sign post or lights.
British health and safety culture would never give you this sort of access to an ancient site.

My little brother went down it with some Greek kids with a torch when I was there.
British health and safety would probably close the entire site!
