Hello

I'm planning on taking the Karakoram Highway from Kashgar in China to Pakistan this summer. I've checked with the Foreign office and they advise against going but they also advise not going to Indonesia which is quite safe to travel in.

I was wondering if anybody has any information about this or has done it them themselves and knows whether its safe.

Ta muchly

I spent last summer in Northern Pakistan and travelled on the Karakorum from Karimabad to Islamabad and had no problems, tho some parts at night involved waiting until there was a big enough convoy of cars buses etc and then being escorted by the army/police.

The Foreign Office have to say these things to cover their arses and some parts of Pakistan are (trust me)dodgy as fuck.

Gilgit town on the Highway is a real mix of Sunni Shia and Ismarli and kicks off once in a while(think mortars and machine guns rather than sticks and stones)but on the whole its a fantastic country with some of the most hospitable people Ive ever met.

Hears a vid of the KKH taken by me from the roof of a bus.
