Anyone know whats going on with The Rosendale? It's all fenced off and full of scaff towers.

It's pretty close to me, but i never really bothered in it's last incarnation and in speaking to neighbours it was a bit different before that, more pub like iyswim

any danger of it being a decent boozer? since the Alleyns Head is like a hotel reception and it seems Jack Stamps in W Norwood is soon to be a cuntland (Tesco)

ta :)

According to Squaremeal (http://www.squaremeal.co.uk/news/display.php?CategoryID=101), it is being turned into a gastropub by the same people who took over the Greyhound in Battersea.

It's been taken over by the folks who run a posh gastropub called the Greyhound in Battersea. Ground floor of the Rosendale will be gastropub and real ales etc and upstairs a fancy restaurant. By the looks of the Greyhound prices I don't think I'll be spending much time in there, which is a shame cos I only live 2mins walk away :(

The Alleyn isn't too bad and it's the place I tend to frequent most but I agree we don't really have a decent boozer in West Dulwich.

The banner outside the Rosendale says 'opening in June' but it looks like a bombsite right now

My housemate was the tiny barman there. He says its going to be turned into a posher place with more food in July.

I was lucky enough to help drink all the leftover alcohol on the last day before refurbishment.

Bumping the thread cos I went into the newly opened Rosendale last Thursday night. We had a couple of drinks in the ground floor bar area. At the moment everything is smelling slightly of paint, so it's not at its best but the main thing which I disliked about it was how bright it was in there. It had all the atmosphere of an airport lounge at Terminal 3. The wine was expensive and in my opinion not at all great. I don't think I will be returning which is a shame cos its only 2mins walk from my flat :(

Got to Gypsy Hill. The Mansion does the flash/camp gastroub thing very well and fans of the traditional are served by the excellent Two Towers Irish boozer.

Yeah, Ive been in the Mansion a couple of times and it's really nice. Just a bit of a trek down to Gipsy Hill and it would have been nice to have a new place to drink in W.Dulwich. I'll keep going to the Alleyn. :)

boo and :o @ self.

will give the food a go at least.

my main hope is for it's garden. the garden at the alleyns head isnt really a garden as such and it's a trek to the greyhound in the village for al fresco beer.

The garden was closed last night, its being painted. It's a really small space and is exactly as it was before. I thought they might have added a new garden area on the other side but looks like they were on a very limited budget. All in all it's not a transformation from the original pub but merely a bit of a paint job and some new furniture. You can probably gather from all this that I don't like it :D

oh right! i assumed all that demolition type stuff on the other side was for a garden as well

and i was hoping it wouldn't be as you describe inside but i had a sneaky suspicion it might!

bugger.

still, i'll give it a whirl.

Report back tomorrow :D

Well i sat in the side garden, drank some lovely dark rum from the pretty wide selection of booze and ate a banging burger and chips which cost £7.50 (considering the prices in the restaurant that wasn't too bad)

we tried to walk in the garden behind the restauraunt but they wouldn't let us :D

that bit on the right hand side of the pub is going to be a kitchen garden to give the pub some of it's veg/herbs and stuff apparently.

the bar works better where they have moved it too as well

does feel a bit unfinished in places, big hole in the patio bit, few unpainted bits around be interested to see how it does, especially with the food.

bit of a sore head today

Yeah i reckon so, not loads and loads but the food was good and it's garden is nicer than the Alleyns Head. I'd quite like to give the restaraunt a go at some point when i am feeling a bit flusher.

plus i always feel like i am sat in a Travelodge reception @ the Alleyn :D

will still go to the Greyhound/Mansion more i think.

I only sat in the bar area on the ground floor when I went in and am confused as to the set-up of the restaurant bits. Is there a restaurant on the 1st floor or just the split level bit of the ground floor?

just the split level of the ground floor from what i could see.

i tried to bowl through it to the garden out the back, pint in hand, cos thats where the sun was and they stopped me :D

dunno whats going on upstairs, its big enough to put stuff up there if they get busy enough i guess.

Time Out review:

A good test of any gastropub is dealing with awkward diners. We were late: they held the table. We wanted child-friendly dishes not on the menu: they obliged, without hesitation.

Any pub with clientele like that can kiss goodbye to my potential custom.

I quite fancied going there when they were known for pizza, but not after reading this thread/that review.

TimeOut are showing their usual high standards of independent research, and not just regurgitating the PR's press release.

Coaching inn, my arse. The Rosendale was just a high class mid-Victorian suburban pub, which probably had a stable round the back.

Rosendale Road was in the middle of a field until 1845. I'm fairly sure the pub wasn't built until well after the arrival of the railway at West Dulwich in 1860, by which time the last mailcoach was a distant memory.

There's a book on the history of all the pubs of Norwood. You could look it up.

Bit odd that the Timeout review lists the nearest station as West Norwood.

West Dulwich Station is nearer than that

I used to live on Park Hall Rd, and although its a pretty close thing I'd also say West Dulwich station is closer to the Rosendale pub than West Norwood.

Went last night... probably the best meal I've ever had (technically, sometimes a big standard fry up tastes like the best ever).

Was fancy without being too wanky... £13 for a really good white wine wasn't too bad.

2 of us, starters, mains and a shared cheese plate, with wine, came to £85 which isn't actually that bad.

Service was fantastic, really friendly waiters, didn't feel looked down upon for wearing hoody and trainers.

Had the ravioli then the ostrich, fucking good

Would recommend, but it's definitely not a pub.

ostrich.

Holly mother of christ!!!
From that report The Rosendale has certainly changed..
I guess the peabody mob have been vacated & the serving up of cocaine has been knocked on the head then...

Ostrich is now on the menu... 'Oh My days'...

Not discrediting you Chris filter..
Just that place was once Toots favourite hang-out..

Yeah, it's a proper fancy restaurant now.. very, very different to before. Would only be able to afford to eat their once a year though.

Really mixed clientele though.. didn't look like the people eating there were particularly wanky.

I didn't eat there so you can't really count me as giving it the full review ;)

My main winge was how dazzlingly and glaringly bright the main bar area was though. Although it's looked more dimly lit recently when I walk past.

Maybe someone else who also hates brightly lit pubs complained :D

I'm sure the grub is very nice and everything and I don't mind spending money on a decent meal out but I would feel a bit cheated to spend £100 on a "local" dining experience.

For that kinda money you could have a proper, fanci experience out and not one I'd be able to get the 322 home from! :D

It is fucking superb, and a lovely building, and somehow manages to avaoid being a complete posh wanker hole.

The waiters are fucking brilliant, the winelist is incredible and offers a good choice at the cheaper end of the scale.

Deserved winner imho. A good place for a nice treat.

We had 3 courses and a really, really nice bottle of wine and it came to £90 for two, with a tip.

It's honestly some of the best food I've ever eaten (for me, I enjoyed it more than the Fat Duck and Le Manoir) and in nice and relaxed surroundings. When we ate there there we plenty of hoodie wearers like myself... not once didn't it seem snobby... after all that, you can get pissed in the bar then walk home.. result

I've only been to the Rosendale once, but its sister pub The Greyhound is just round the corner from me at work.

Food's decent ime, but it can be a little underwhelming ime. There's a vague kind of Italian influence there, but sometimes it suffers from being a little overfussy and a little indistinct to me.

Good food for a pub mind, and I can't fault the winelist either - it's a great place to try wines by the glass. On someone else's expense account.

It was a bit of a rough old boozer in it's day :) Long before my time but had friends who used to go there and they can't believe how much it's changed.
