My Good Lady has just rung me. She was in a shop in Oxford Street when all of a sudden she felt heat on her back and a window smashed.

The shop she was in only caught on fire.  She and others rushed out quickly. She's pretty shaken up but she's taking photos now so she's unhurt. :D Apparently, it's a pretty full on fire.

Just another humdrum day in London.

Fucking typical of the wankers, eh? Trying to move people away for safety, to allow the firefighters to get to put the fire out, to keep the street moving and all that sort of shit ... Don't they fucking know that it is now a fucking Human Right to take photos and text them to Sky ...

... Tell her to sue the bastards if she loses out ...

I wouldn't be at all surprised if LDR was actually rolling his eyes at Mrs LDR, db. :p :)

I would have thought threatening someone with arrest isn't necessarily the best for public relations when they could have just asked her politely to move.

But I'm no expert and am happy to be proved wrong.

So where was it and where's the photos and more to the point, has it brought London to a grinding halt?

She told me the name of the shop but it didn't register with me and I can't remember it. Plus she was talking in panic rush mode so wasn't making much sense.

She's on her way home now so I guess I'll get more details when she arrives.

I would agree about the "how", if there was absolutely no lead up / previous communication.

Just got in & feel a lot calmer now I'm home. Basically I was in the basement part of the New Look shop & there was a siren going off periodically for at least 5 mins or so until we were told to get out the shop. At this stage I was trying on shoes so had to faff around putting my own ones back on. Then a panicked shop attendant rushed up to me & told me to leave immediately due to fire! So I bolted up the stairs & ran out through the door. The fire was at least a floor or two above, but I could feel the heat on my back & hear windows exploding & glass raining down.

It was pretty scary... the flames coming out of the windows were huge & a lot of smoke was escaping. I rung up LDR once outside but the conversation was garbled on my part due to my shaken state. I took a few pics on my phone then went into a shop further down but realised I was in no state to shop so left the building.

Once outside again I looked back to see the emergency services had arrived & it was at this point some female copper threatened a group of us with arrest. Hell it's not like I was intending on hanging around!

Anyway apart from feeling like minute shards of glass have fallen on my skin, I'm fine physically. There's no cuts I can see just a few areas on my arms that feel as if they've been pin-pricked.

Well that's it for now... we're off for a bite to eat & to go to the pub. Think it's deserved!

You didn't do a sneaky and walk out with them. The shoplifting alarms would have been drowned out by the fire alarms no? ;)

Looks even less impressive when resized, but there were huge plumes of smoke billowing out - this is as close as I could get. Look! Look in the tiny distance and see the tiny smoke! Police were busy threatening to arrest ngeru and others for sightseeing during an emergency situation. ;)

Was having a pint outside the John Snow on Broadwick St, and you could smell the smoke from there, and it got worse as you approached Oxford St.

its the shops between Oxford Circus and Tottenham Court Road...

about an hour ago, 10.30pm, the fire brigade were still hosing into what looked like the roof of M and S, and there was still smoke all over the area.

Hope no one was hurt.

Yes... well I'm hoping for a drama-free day today! :D

Tbh now when thinking about the coppers threatening arrest I'm more angry that the shop staff didn't tell us to vacate the building earlier. The alarm was going for a good 5 or so mins & there wasn't any evidence of fire down in the basement... I thought maybe someone had shop-lifted something or there was a security breach of some sort. Perhaps if we were told to leave earlier, I wouldn't have tried on shoes... perhaps I could have avoided running underneath exploding windows & raining glass!  That was the scariest part...

I'm feeling OK today though. :)

That's the thing isn't it - if you were in your own building and the fire alarm went off, you'd probably evacuate quickly. Because it's a shop you are unfamiliar with and we're innundated with bells and rings these days, you've no idea what it's ringing for.

Alarms in shops / public buildings really should have a vocal component - ie "Please evacuate the building".

i was in oxford st at that time and the smoke was massive. i thought terrorists might have targeted the new Primark to get at British women's dress code
