I'm off to the South Pacific in September to see (and molest) mango5. I'm flying via Sydney and we've decided to spend a week in this fine city before flying off to her island paradise. Can anyone suggest any decent medium priced hotels in Sydney that we can stay in while I recover from the flight and have a nose around the local touristy things?

I couldn't recommend this place unless you don't mind noise. The interior hadn't been updated in a while and the aircon unit was ancient but the aircon did work. The old fashion interior wasn't a concern for me, depends how fussy you are.

Negative

around 5am everymorning the bins round the back of the hotel were emptied, even with ear plugs it still woke me up. This might not be a problem if you get a room at the front of the hotel.

Positive

Good location (not far to a train station, if you dont mind walking, you could walk to the city centre)
Relatively cheap
Clean

If you're staying for a week, it would be worth going to the blue mountains. I believe you can get a train to the blue mountains (Katoomba), then its a mile or two walk to echo point (or get a taxi). I didn't do that, I hired a car from Sydney.

Those are fab photos  We're not going to have a car, so thanks for the tip about the train. Will probably give the hotel a miss. My 'island paradise' is decent but basic and I fancy a step up for a few days :)

You really can't go past

always use it when going into the city. If you fancy something really nice the Observatory is one of the best hotels I've stayed in otherwise we use the Sebel Pier One. That's nice aswell, built over the water and just a short stroll to the Rocks (Sydney's old bit) and only 15 mins from the centre.

The YWCA (Y-on-the-Park) is okay, stayed there a couple of time in 2005.

The best place I've stayed in Sydney is a hostel, but it's a very quiet, well-run, beautifully decorated hostel with a gorgeous garden for sitting out in and a really good quality kitchen/communal area. Not so great if yer after hotel-like privacy (although we stayed in a room which was accessed through the back garden, and was really nice with a table outside the window to eat brekkie in the sun), but def. one to recommend:
Wattle House in Glebe (nice area too - plenty of good cafes, bars and book shops):

I like llantwit's suggestion. I don't know the hotel, but Glebe is a lovely place to stay. A few years ago a friend of mine went to Sydney, and i found this place (http://www.alishan.com.au/) in Glebe for her. She said it was great, and the people who ran it were really nice.

I managed to get a really cheap deal on a week here:

It's actually pretty flash, but apartments rather than swanky hotel, so if you're lucky you might get something equally cheap (deppending on the season etc). Worth firing off an email about anyway as it's seriously nice and right in the center.

Cheers for the ideas. Wotif looks good. I'm still giving it some thought, but I've got till September.
