View Full Version : where do you go in london - habit wise
i'm mostly an east london chap now, live in hackney, work in hackney, days can pass without me actually leaving hackney
tend to go to the city quite a lot, to the barbican for culture and that, or islington, for pubs /restaurants. camden a bit for drinks
west end occasionally
west - very rarely, i drive through there on the way to the M4 to go to bath
south - again might drive through. occasional trips to brixton (reminder to self - must go off line more)
are you a creature of habit?

brixton is where i live & socialise a lot.
old street/shoreditch is where i always seem to work (for the past eight years on & off). also do a lot of socialising round here (and have done for years). either after work, or herbal/fabric type places, or meeting old colleagues, etc. islington for dinner/drinks sometimes, with various different groups of friends, colleagues, ex colleagues.
london bridge sometimes too. (just cos i love it there).
west end for meeting friends/cinema, etc.
i think brixton & old street/shoreditch/angel, are my main socialising areas now.
i forgot london bridge, sometimes go down there and walk along the river to the tate modern and the southbank, then over the bridge to st pauls and a bus back to liverpool st
i used to go out in kilburn and maida vale a lot, i worked on the harrow road near maida vale for 7 years, rarely go back that way now

I tend to go to work. Then I cycle home.
i tend to end up on the south bank a lot... london bridge / globe / tate / south bank centre / oxo tower / gabriels wharf.
or in oxford street :)

I go to the South Bank, a lot. I love being by the river. Most especially for the sunsets.
At the moment, I'm going to the museums at South Ken with my young son almost every week, because they are so darn good. I never fail to fid something new, they're free, you can take your own lunch. They're just amazing really.
Occasionally I take my daughter shopping 'up west' 'cos she loves the big Topshop, and we make a day of it.
And I quite like covent garden every now and then, if I'm looking for new shoes or something...
I go drinking around Leytonstone and Stratford a fair bit. While I party out East round Old Street, Shoreditch, etc.
I got to Brixton at least once or twice a month for PRoD or Offline. I used to go a lot more but I prefer staying local now as it's a lot cheaper and more of my drinking partners prefer the east too.
I rarely ever go West or North London these days.

Not really.
Mind you I have to go to Maplins on the Strand to get a 200ma fuse in a minute.
live in Tottenham, and go to the local pub or Turnpike Lane mostly.
but otherwise Angel sort of area, as it's near where rich! works and has ok pubs and the indian veg.
Or Old street or London bridge, because they has the best pubs.
Wood Green because I get dragged along to the ghastly shopping emporium.
Other places: Alexandra palace for green bits/pub/garden centre/farmer's market.
Just discovered Walthamstow marshes. Green bits, woody bits, canal and a brilliant pub.
Finsbury park for lidls and the park.
I work in North Acton. I wouldn't dream of spending a minute longer in the area than I had to.
Not really.

which pub, princess of wales? hope and anchor? or more up towards tottenham?
Live in Streatham and do most of my socialising Streatham/Tooting etc.
Work in Kentish Town, sometimes go out around there. Over in South East London see family/friends sometimes.
Hardly ever go into central to socialise nowadays.

200ma fuses are not normal like 13, 5 or 10 amp. It's more exciting than you think.
when i first moved to london in 1989, i thought nothing of traipsing from one end to the other for a night out, can't be arsed nowadays spending an hour odd getting somewhere

I've become lazy too. I now live and work in South London so rarely leave, when I used to go from East to South and back every day I'd make lots of stop offs, south bank, west end etc.
Tend to drink and socialise mainly in Southwark and Lambeth. Live and Work in Southwark.
Go grocery shopping in East St
Weekends or 'nights out' tend to be East end.
I go most places I suppose but rarely Camden and North London unless there's a party there.
Go shopping in Covent Garden/West End every so often but I hate the crush....

Um, can't remember but I reckon it must be the anchor and hope, judging by this description: http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/s/21/2108/Anchor_and_Hope/Clapton
and it was that near the park, I'm sure.

know it, quite a small boozer really, was run by the same bloke for about 50 years until a few years back, I live about 15 minutes walk from there, the princess of wales is about 10 minutes walk along the canal from there, larger pub (a youngs pub for ale fans) more of an outside area
Usually just around Brixton (top of the Hill) or Shoreditch, I don't like Shoreditch but it's where most of my lot end up on nights out if not in Brixton.

We'll have to try that one out next time it's sunny.
I like the little one, it probably helped that the neighbours were playing some really good musid out of their flat window, and I bumped into a couple of people I knew there. A brilliant place to have 10 minutes cycle from out front door. we are probably neighbours!

Live in West Dulwich and spend a lot of time walking in my neighbourhood/ Dulwich Village and Herne Hill, sometimes go as far as Sydenham Woods on a Sunday morning . Drink in my local in Dulwich or more often in the West End on St Martins Lane and Soho.
Do my grocery shopping at Asda on the Old Kent Road and stockup on Oriental stuff from the shop on Electric Ave in Brixton. I head into the West End or Kings Rd in Chelsea for clothes shopping etc.
Work at St Pauls/Old Bailey so am usually found walking around by the Tate Modern and Millenium bridge in my lunch hours or occasionally pop up to Covent Garden for a change on one of the old Routemasters from Ludgate Hill.
Usually eat out on The Cut in Waterloo or my favourite thai place just off Tottenham Court Road.
So in summary, Im all over the place :)
Used to go to Lewisham to meet my dealer
Around the city / Canary Wharf for after works drinks
Sometimes end up in some bars around Bethnal Green
Got mates in Bromley
When I was living in Poplar, I stayed in East London pretty much - Whitechapel, Stratford, Hackney, Bethnal, Stepney, occasionally to Old Street/Shoreditch. No further central than the end of Commercial Road really. And I'd go to see my mum in Sydenham sometimes.
eta I worked in Lewisham for a bit as well, and went to New Cross/Deptford now and again.
is that where they do real cheap lush roasts? :)
think so, haven't eaten there in a while though, it's a nice place to stop if we have a little stroll around the marshes and the middlesex filter beds:)

I am a lazy fucker me. Live in Brixton... occasionally get all the way to Tulse Hill or Stockwell if I'm feeling energetic. Even the Albert seems a little far away to me at times.
Saturday's main food shop is at Brixton market, with the occasional weeknight top-up from the oriental superstore, Portuguese deli or Nune's. Do most of my drinking locally, particularly in the Hobgob, where I'm listed as part of the fixtures and fittings. Most of the folks I grew up with are here, and I've persuaded many of the uni pals to settle here over many years.
It's lazy, but I can't fault it really. It's nice having a proper neighbourhood.

hardly ever stray outside of South London these days..
Do most of my shopping in Deptford, and I go to the leisure centre there.
I go to the cinema in Peckham sometimes, and the rest of the time I go walking the dog round Canada Water, Southwark Park and other parts of Bermonsdey.

Drinking after work: Shoreditch/Old Street (much as I can't stand it)
Quick pint after getting home: Lewisham
Wander out on a sunny afternoon: Greenwich
Cinema: Greenwich
Meeting the mrs from work: New Cross
Oooh, Greenwich is lovely to wander round on a sunny Sunday!
Everyone seems to stay put quite a bit, don't they? That's quite odd really, although I do it too.
Luckily I've moved 4 times since I've been here so I've stayed put in 4 different areas of London. :D
Live in Islington, work in Southwark, Drink in Essex Road, Angel, Old St with the odd visit to Stoke Newington and Dalston thrown in. Hamsters Heath, Finsbury Park or Highbury Fields for fresh air.
We hardly ever go on nights out South of the River any more even though we get tempted by good looking nights, we're just too lazy to get the night bus home.

I lived in three different areas so got to see a bit of London - never lived in west London though so it's a total blank in my mind
The thing with London is it's just too big to go trekking from one side to the other, especially negotiating pubic transport.

Streatham and Wandsworth are where I spend most of my time.. Brixton and West Croydon will usually be my 'socialising'. Putney sometimes. Usually go to Bloomsbury/Bermondsey/Mile End on the weekends to visit friends. So I don't really stay put, I suppose...

A sometimes extraordinary place. Known as the 'little house' by some locals. Unfortunately the governor Les (MBE no less) died a little while back, but the pub has lost little of it's (ahem) charm.
Edited to make it clear I'm on about the H & A, not the Princess of Wales.

I totally disagree! :)
I am new to Ldn (14 months) and have lived in the East, South and West. I'm now in E5. I am still goggly-eyed about how easy it is to get around. Easpecially compared to the one-bus-an-hour place in Sussex I'm from.
As I've moved around a lot I tend to go to mates manors to go out - and that's beacuse they are less keen to leave their manors as they have forgotten to vast bounty of Ldn transport and got lazy.

I stay in N17, mostly. I cycle toTottenham High Road to shop about once a week and go to the retail park in Tottenham Hale for Lidl. If we go to the pub, we go to the Ferry Boat near Tottenham Lock. I rarely go into the West End, it's horrific.
Work in Clerkenwell, live in Wimbledon but otherwise don't have much to do with the place.
Tend to gravitate toward Camden (habits of yoof, what can you say, plus being a native North Londoner) and Soho, because it's the middle, basically.

Most well worn routes are:
Local SE23 parks bars cafes for local stuff
Brixton, Crystal Palace and New Cross for socialising
Soho for a Beach Burrito (the best MexCal food in Europe! well worth the hour round trip just for a bite! http://www.nickster.com/mexilondon/list.htm)
Shoreditch for some Vietnamese food on a Sunday
Aylesbury Estate and Kings Cross for work - sometimes hit chapel market for an Indian Veg
Ocassionaly hit Southbank for some faffing
Ocasional mission up to Finsbury Park or Barnet to see old pals.
Peckham for market - lewisham for cheap Sri Lankan food
I totally disagree! :)

Youre right about that - Londoners gettoo lazy and reluctant to move about.
I used to bop all over london and surroudnign counties, for work and play, getting a bit more routine these days...

Well I've been here since 98 (East London first, then West) and also think it's easy to get from one side of London to the other. Can be time consuming, I suppose, but I'm used to 40 minutes on the Pic Line to get into Covent Garden. Having said that, I spent all my formative years travelling half an hour from home to get into Bristol, so spending time on a bus or whatever is no big deal.
I think it is laziness on the part of a lot of people.
As for where do I go in London.. I go all over the place. Always open to suggestions :)
In the last six months, I’ve travelled extensively around London.
Live in Stockwell, and get to Clapham, the Junction, Brixton, Kennington Park, Streatham, Waterloo, along the Embankment from Vauxhall to Shad Thames – its one of the few stretches of London ‘streets’ I can push a wheelchair with some ease.
I spend a lot of time between Holborn, Bloomsbury, Euston and Clerkenwell; as well as in Islington and Hackney. I travel to Acton and Brent occasionally; and, enjoy the ‘delights’ of Camden Town and Hampstead, half-a-dozen times a year. Whenever I can, I get to Soho and Covent Garden.

I live in Charlton and work in Greenwich, and don't often need to go far out of Greenwich borough. I do my shopping largely in Woolwich, 'cos the market is good and cheap and a lot of my socialising and ambling around in Greenwich. Come the summer I'll be avoiding central Greenwich when I can, though: it's way too jammed with camera-clicking tourists and you can't get a seat in the pub. I'll be hanging about in Blackheath instead: the pubs are nearly as nice and it's not as crowded.
I don't often go into central London, with the exception of the odd lecture, night out or visit to the British Library.
I do go to Kew for the National Archives on a regular basis, but I rarely see much of the place except for the familiar walk between station and archives.
brixton is where i live & socialise a lot.
old street/shoreditch is where i always seem to work (for the past eight years on & off). also do a lot of socialising round here (and have done for years). either after work, or herbal/fabric type places, or meeting old colleagues, etc. islington for dinner/drinks sometimes, with various different groups of friends, colleagues, ex colleagues.

i think brixton & old street/shoreditch/angel, are my main socialising areas now.
I think I saw you around old street a few weeks back. You looked rather deep in thought just up the stairs at exit 1/2.

Work in Westminster - and leave it as soon as I can. Sometimes pop down to Tate Britain at lunchtime.
Live Highgate/Tufnell Park/Kentish Town area. Go to some local pubs and also some over at Belsize Park/Hampstead area.
Spend quite a bit of time walking the dogs on Hampstead Heath.
Take a bus to Swiss Cottage most days on way to work, then sometimes have a drink there on way home.
Drive Mrs F over to shop at Waitrose on Holloway Road if I really really have to.
Occasionally meet up with mates at Finsbury Park and watch some football in pubs over there.
Sometimes go to west end to the cinema, mainly Curzon Soho.
Go to gigs sometimes mainly at Brixton Academy, Astoria, Forum and Barbican.

Work at Green Park so unfortunately have to look at the West End- though actually it has some lovely/interesting back streets.
Live in Brixton and family/boyfriend in Stockwell so I suppose I have to hang round these areas... mainly the day to day living bit.
Favourite places is North London - hackney, Tottenham, Walthamstow...but it's finding a decent reason to visit them... The Rivers Lea and Thames are two great places to have a wander.

Yes looking back at that it does seem a little vague. I live in brixton, have friends in SE london and east end, and i work all over london... but didn't think you'd really want to know every suburb i travel to regularly ;) (and no, i am not a minicab driver)
