i have always pre-ordered $ from my uk bank...check out the exchange rates everyday and get them at a peak..about 2.5 is as good as you will get for a short while in the next 2 weeks.

you may have to purchase over a certain amount of $$ from a bank? if they have none in stock..can't remember how much.

travelers cheques..always found them ore hassle than anything else...tbh.

your gf not got an account you could transfer it to in aus??

if you have a master card /acsess/credit ??? thingy you can withdraw $$ from the cash dispenser (ATM) in aus from yer uk account using yer card....cheque yer bank for details.;)

Don't use credit cards to get cash on a regular basis, they make big charges for this service.

Use your regular cash card (can't bring myself to say ArseToMouth). You get the best exchange rate this way and in Oz there's plenty of cash machines. (In towns at any rate)

you can use uk cashpoint cards in oz...but some of them charge....I'm with barclays in the uk and they have an agreement with westpac to not charge and vice versa...check with your bank.....forget travellers cheques - outdated now.....cashpoint all the way.

they don't charge commission.

Rates always seem a bit crap though.

Do you get anyone on the high street charging commission anymore?

m&s sterling to euro rate is 1.412 today when the real rate is about 1.465 (yahoo cc and others)
i know there is an online bank acc where you can get the real rate, probably for bigger amounts only though
wondering if anyone knows an easier way to get the real rate

I find it easier to just use a normal debit/cash point card. Most banks charge per transaction rather than per unit, so as long as you withdraw lots at big intervals you come out on top. You also get commercial exchange rates, which are almost always much better than anything you would get in a post office/travel agent/bureau de change etc

Has anyone checked what the rate spreads are like on cashcard withdrawals?

I've lazily reckoned that if I spent an hour planning and obtaining a better rate, I'd do better to spend that time earning instead... but are the rates terrible?

If you buy in shops you pay only the currency exchange rate which is 2.7% of whatever you buy. If you withdraw from a cash machine you get charged the exchange rate PLUS 1.5 % of the value you withdrew

So that'd be £3 on £200 worth of substence and shopping in Brussels: hardly worth sweating about.

Hmmm. A £2 - £2.50 charge shows up... would that be that, then?

What worried me, and would take me a fair long time to find out, was the buy/sell spread on the rate they were offering. Had anyone done the work already... :)
